Would someone be so kind as to clue me into what the deal is on these 70's(?) gibby(?) pups w/ the black vinyl(?) backs?

here

this poor SG has seen better days .. but the second to last pic shows the pups I am wondering about.

Thanks ~G

Those are Lawrence-designed 'Super Humbuckers', or 'Series VII', or something like that. I had a Les Paul 25/50 that had them, they are about 12K and have big ceramic magnets like an Invader/X2N. They are filled with epoxy; they don't have a base plate - the coils and magnets are situated in the cover, then the mounting strip (it's a piece of brass sheetstock) is laid on top and the whole thing is gooped.

Actually they sound pretty good IMO. Mine had a second braided lead for coil cutting.

hey thanks .. I have one in my 72 SG neck ... the bridge didnt match it.. it has the stamped pat # baseplate.. I've always wonder'd which was original? ... they sound fantastic IMO. interesting that you mention coil cutting .. as my SG has the oldest push/pull pot I have ever seen in a guitar .(now bypassed). so maybe the orig. was same as yours and had a tap going???

epoxy ... that makes sense ... and that mounting strip always looked hoopty to me glued in like that.. interesting design.

thats good info man .. thank you ~G

Are you sure about the DC resistance? I had a 1979 SG (looked just like that - sold it Sunday 8/14/05) with those pickups. Mine measured lt;8K bridge, and neck lt;7K (in circuit). I couldn't pull them out because the guitar was 100% original.

Everything else sounds correct - epoxy filled, ceramic magnets. Sounded good to me as well (and to the person I sold it to).

FWIW .. the neck one i have is 7.4k

thanks again for the info guys!

The funny thing is, they sounded (to me compared to my other 17 guitars) dark and powerful. You would think they would be bright and thin or harsh. Maybe the pots were only 250K, but I bdoubt it.
