I want to get a new pickgaurd for my tele. I'm trying to decide which is the best option. Is their any advantage to having the neck pickup screwed to the pickguard or can it be mounted without having to have screw holes in the pickguard?
I like the look of having the mounting screws hidden for the neck pickup but i don't understand how it works. Does the pickup get attached to the body cavity?

it is attached directly to thebody. It's a clean look, but a hassle when making adjustments.

When I have a Tele that I want to have a classic 51 or 52 look, I mount to the body; otherwise, I mount to the pickguard.
thanks guys for the info!
My next question is how do you mount the pickup to the body?

If you buy a Duncan Tele neck pickup, they usually come with the mounting screws and tubing you need to install the vintage way. If your Tele has no holes in the cavity, I would put the screws in the pickup's mounting holes and center it in the cavity. I would drill a couple of pilot holes to shore-up everything. Then install the tubing to the screws so that it's in between the body and the pickup.
body mounting the neck pup was the biggest single PITA of replacing the pickups in my tele clone ... i prefer pickguard mounted because i dont give a rat's butt about vintage correct look ... i just want to have the ease of installation / adjustment

Mounting it to the body, preferably with some silicon tube in place of springs or some high density rubber foam gives better acoustic damping...
