Zakkly what I was gonna say...

The guy from Jethro Tull's Hamer Standard just sold recently on ebay for about the same $$$$ which is too bad 'cause I was really thinking about finding an old one myself but I think that these are worth a lot more because of the rock-star thing.

GS

Yeah..they are collector pieces for sure...

Honestly I prefer the newer ones rather than many of the older ones...basically cos they put that silly pup switch ring on 'em, and alot of them had dot inlays...which I think look quot;wrongquot; with the Burst finishes.

But I'd like to get ahold of one anyway to see how good those old Gibson PAF's rewound by Larry, and the original DiMarzio PAF's Hamer used sound...owners say they are some seriously fantastic pups.

Are the new ones the same spec as the old ones and what is considered old?

Just for the pickups? How could that be a good investment?

GS

I didn't like the Pretenders much either except for a couple of songs. But the guy really did get some wonderful, lush guitar tones, particularly on the intro to Chain Gang (or whatever the tune is called), but in general too. He had a really good ear.

The dude had TONE!

Nice post, nicer guitar! I saw the P'tenders about a month or so before Jim Honeyman Scott died. It was a great show. I had the opportunity to strum a few chords on a Hamer just like it (serial number around 280). As an instrument, it seemed larger than life at the time.

Considering the retail price of that model guitar (in that era was $1200 the Hamer Standard at Lier's Music in San Bernardino, CA had theirs in the glass case for nearly a year or so), I have seen far worse price appreciation than this example.

Not the first time that guitar has been offered for sale. It looks like the pickups have been changed since the last time it was for sale. It did have open coil pickups. Curious about that. The auction copy says the info is from his family member/wife? Who knows maybe they were spurred on by the recent sale of Hamer Standard #0002 Martin Barre's. IIRC it went for just over $10K. Interestingly I own #0189 the one right after JHS's . Life IS GOOD!!!

Edited to note: by 1979 Hamer was using all Dimarzios in the Standards. Only the very first few had the Gibbers in 'em.

Awesome! Thankyou for sharing! The Hamer Standard was the first guitar I lusted for. I forgot that Dimarzio was the the standard pickup. Oh well. Your guitar is one of the most beatiful objects in the world.

I loved the first album, a great debut! I didn't get any other of their other
albums until quot;Learning To Crawlquot; came out in 1984 (I borrowed it to learn
quot;Back On The Chain Gangquot; for a one-off gig).

BTW, James Honeyman-Scott was already dead at that point and replaced
by Robbie McIntosh for the album (Billy Bremner played the lead guitar on
“Back On The Chain Gang”).

Are you saying Honeyman-Scott had two of those?

GS

OOPS!! I was wrong about the pickups. These are the same pickups that were in it when I saw it for sale before. I was talking with a friend who bought a guitar from the previous seller that was offering #0188 FS. He had found the one he bought after looking at this first and the following other links. It was a guitar shop out of Atlanta area IIRC. JHM's wife was cosigning it through them. Same price too.

That's gonna make somebody very happy, I wish it were me!

Those early Hamers are very, very good but I wonder if they are worth more than 10.000 $. What part of that price is the namedropping ?4000 for the guitar and 6000 for the name ?

Jol Danzig?

A place like Bonhams's should at least get his name right.

Well the whole guitar collectors market, IMO is just silly....a $250K 59 Paula is a wonderful instrument...but c'mon....I've played a couple 50s Les Pauls as well as some early 60s SGs and a 58 V, and indeed there is some quot;magicquot; about them....a little bit extra of everything...tone...mojo...whatever you want to say...but nothing I can see where it's worth the extra $ involved. I think it's more a quot;statusquot; thing than actual worth.

IMO, the big difference is amps...not guitars...the difference in older amplifiers vs a reissue is far greater than old guitars vs. new.

As for the Hamer, I don't know..I have not played an old one...I cannot imagine from a construction standpoint they could get much if any better than what mine is (because it's such a friggin great guitar)...I think the diff would be tone, due to older pups, and aged wood. Again though...an extra $8000 worth of tone?

I would be much more inclined though to pay 10K for a vintage Hamer than $250K for a Paula if I was a collector ...to me 10K is right at the edge of insanity, pricing wise for a hunk of wood and metal, if I was filthy rich that is. Still, I think I'd rather pay $4K for a completely new custom shop guitar made to my exact specs, with handwound pups from BK or whomever, and NOS wood.

I don't understand collecting...I understand wanting alot of guitars and amps...I don't understand the astronomical pricing and quot;statusquot; assiciated with it....don't begrudge others for enjoying and participating though
