Ok, I've never really gone for Les Pauls as I've always been a Strat style man. However, after recently playing my singers Epi Les Paul Custom I've now got serious GAS for one. The options above show which one's I can get good deals on and/or the ones that appeal so your collective knowledge and opinions will be gratefully received. I would especially like any opinions on the Boneyard (since it is quite different to the other Pauls).

i'd go for the 1st or 2nd option.

joe perry's thing looks sweet, but his name is on the headstock.

thread predictibility report : later in the thread, some or many people will tell you to try epis before you decide to buy em.

I was thinking that whilst I wrote the thread lol!!!!

P.S, just to qualify, the Vintage Sunburst Classic is the plus model with the flame top - just forgot to add it to the poll doh!!!

don't get the epi boneyard...it looks horrible in person...real fake looking flame which looks like they are almost painted on stripes, it looks nothin like the real one!

That and i didn't like the feel of the neck either. Im sure the gibson is a far superior instrument but i thought an Epi LP Custom i played a while ago was far better

i would love to see that Lp man, post some pics
OK

Mmm. I thought the same. I played a friends Gibson Standard at a gig a year or two back and thought it was awful - lifeless pickups and the feel of the neck just wasn't right. However, my singers Epi Custom was great (apart from the microphonic pu's!!!). Tone and feel were much better.

Not much going for the boneyard up to now - shame, I can get it nearly half price although I've yet to see one in the flesh. I will of course, be trying them all out before I buy but any opinions before I try 'em would be good.

The Epi Les Paul Custom I worked on was an excellant guitar! Played well and sounded great...especially after I installed a Duncan Jazz and JB. Seemed like a totally professional instrument afterwards. I did do a fret level, recrown, polish and set-up on it though. It needed it. (But IMO most guitars do!)

My brother has the Epi Les Paul Standard...not nearly the professional quality of the Custom. The neck joint is much better on the Custom. But with Duncan pickups, even the Epi LP Standard can be made into a great sounding guitar...even if it doesn't play quite as well as the Custom.

I played a Custom the other day that was very good. it looks gorgeous!

I say skip the Epi...And go with a Dean.

I might unload my epi goldtop.

Apologies for ignorance, but what differences are there between the Epi LP Standard and the Custom?

Here's pics of the Classic Plus and Custom Plus that I'm looking at.

This is the Classic Plus

This is the Custom PlusThat custom plus looks sweet!

I vote for the Boneyard cause it seems that it got Gibson pickups. As the let down of my Epi was the electronics, I guess this a advantage in comparison to the other models you put in your poll. Now if there is a big difference in the price... maybe it's not worth it.

When I bought my epi LP I test several LP's. the classic felt best (so I got it), 2nd was a regular classic and third the boneyard. The only plus were the quot;original Burstbuckersquot; - which is not a real advantage since you can always upgrade the others pickups too.

That Classic is sweet. Nice burst. Now, I will say this, play play play play play as many of them as you can. Look at everything, frets, inlays, fretboard itself, neck/body joint, the works. Play it unplugged to feel for the resonance. If it has it, set it aside in the quot;potential keeperquot; area and play another one. Do this until you've found 2 or 3 really good ones, then eliminate them one by one in the same manner. If you do this, you will get a good one. I've noticed the made in China Epi LP's appear to be consistently better than the Korean made ones. The stock pickups are decent, but I'm so glad I threw the CC in mine.

I'm not a big fan of Custom Bursts, too much ornamentation in the way of the finish, and I don't like the lack of quot;fadequot;. It seems to go Red to Yellow immediately. I don't even consider myself to be a traditionalist, I just like burst standards and white/black customs.

(I'm thinking to myself... change the knobs, open coil pickups, lose the pickguard... lol)

I picked gold top, but that's mainly because I love the look of those. The Custom is probably your best choice.

I own a few Epi's.. have the Epi LP Standard in red sunburst.... not the greatest guitars compaired to some others but they are ok.... Electronics in them suck.. but i fixed that by getting rid of the cheap stuff inside and just wired the lead stock pickup to a single real gibson pot to the jack... oneday i'll get a better switch and another pot to add the neck PU back in... Love the neck on my Epi LP.... i like the neck shape on my Epi better then i do on my real Gibson LP.... The epi has a place in my collection.... i take it to jams and clubs and i leave my expensive lp at home.. My Epi has even had a broken neck.. headstock snapped in half.... been repaired and i'm still using it... needs a refret

I always loved Gibson lp's in Goldtops but i have never found an Epi Gold Top finnish that looks right.... they don't look that good to me for some reason... so i'd stick with the Sunbursts myself...
