What height do you suggest for the JB? I've been having some problems, it doesn't sound too good, but mostly I think it's because I've only played it through an Marshall MG amp so far, but still, I want to know if it has the right height, because I need to adjust it to the sweet spot.
There is no quot;Sweet Spotquot;!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!
Definately worth playing with-
Mine is in a maple HSS and my sound was rather far from the strings with bass side near1/8 inch and the trebble almost level with the body-
Obviously the wood had a lot to do with it, but I foudn the JB very flexible
Take it almost all the way up to the strings and then start gradually backing it off. I agree that it's pretty dependant on the guitar, but that will get you started.
Or I guess you could use Dave's suggestion.

How'd I know you were going to pipe in on this one...LOL.
Seriously, Sune. It's all preference. You just have to fiddle with it but start with it really close and go from there, lowering it a little bit at a time. This goes for any pickup, not just the JB.
i found out that by lowering it I made it less ear piercing than it was.
Well, sounds like good advices. The reason I ask is because I'm playing it through a Marshall MG, and basically all humbuckers sound like crap through that, except for the clean channel, so therefore I thought that there might have been a suggested height, since adjusting it while playing it through a Marshall MG amp won't give me a very good vision of it's 'real' sound.

I think the JB most definitely has a sweet spot, and I will tell you this - no other pickup gave me fits trying to adjust the p'up height and polepieces as the JB. After all this tinkering, I came to the following conclusions:
The Jb sounds fullest closest to the strings. While this is true of most humbuckers, the JB gets real thin when too low, its almost as if you dialed out the quot;JB-Ness!quot;. Also, I found that it sounds best when the polepieces are adjusted evenly across all strings, not radiused.
I think you can tell you have the sweet spot by the note decay, when you bend or hold a note, it will decay with an almost vocal, open wah sound. A very desirable sound that I did not get at all height settings.
Of course - what sounds great to me, may sound like garbage to someone else, so this is just my humble opinion. Also, my JB is in a PRS Custom 22, mahogany/maple cap body. Personally, I hear none of the over-trebly, bass lacking characteristics everyone complains about, in fact I find it quite warm.

Thank you very much, good advices. My guitar is also mahogany/maple top, maple neck and ebony fretboard. My JB is kind of quot;tiltedquot;, should it be even instead? I have problems getting my JB to sound like sound clips I've heard, it's like a totally different pickup. I doesn't have any sound even near the wah type sound you describe (I know what you mean, I have heard it in sound clips)

hmmmmm...didnt I comment on sound clips not capturing the true sound and vibe of a pickup? Or was that about the Amp? Or was it both?????????
I am gravely sorry my friend... i offer my sympathies for your loss... of seventy bucks and hours of your life because the JB is not worth playing on
try about 3/32 or so from the strings

I got a quot;sweet spotquot; right here for ya'!!! JB rules!!!
Hmm, I will try and play around with it a bit, and if it still isn't satisfacting, I don't know what to do. I would like to know if it should be tilted or not.
I find the JB works best with a quality tube amp. How successful or unsuccessful it is in your rig depends on a lot of factors. I love my JB in my Ernie Ball through my KRANK, but I didn't like it at all in my Kramer focus 1000.
But...truthfully, in the right setup, the JB can be that little determining factor that makes your tone GODLY. I know thats how it is with my setup .
I think the reason why it doesn't sound good is the Marshall MG, so when I get to play it through a tube amp, it'll probably sound better, as you say.
Always used them quite low, sounded good that way, and with a 250k pot.
Do not use it with a 500k pot, unless you like it way open of course.
For me the sweet spot of the JB is in the neck position, flipped 180amp;#176; (screws in traditional quot;neckwardquot; position) about 1/2quot; away from the strings
sune
if you mean tilted side to side thats exactly what i was talking about in my post. the bass side of my jb is much closer to the strings than the treble.
