I'm really liking the idea of the standard raw power. But is it the same as a regular standard as far a quaility and features? Will I still be getting solid body, AA flame maple top, binding, nitro finish, etc? The only difference should be the pups (EMG) and lack of color (natural) right? For $300 less than a regular standard, will I still be getting the same guitar sans color? Plus a set of EMG's? Seems like a deal, is it too good to be true?

Has anyone played one of these? What are your thoughts? I may take the EMG's out and put in some duncans...

I played a Raw Power when it first came out with the chrome 490/498 pickups a few years ago. It's basically a Les Paul Standard before they started putting the flame maple tops and burstbucker pickups in them. It has a flame maple top and a satin finish, but it's not the crappy quot;fadedquot; type finish. It's a typical standard minus the flame top and a satin finish.

The finish is very clean compared to a faded.

The 'satin' finish - would that be the same as nitro?

I'm sure it's a satin nitro finish. Gibson doesn't use poly.

I would, of course, try a bunch out and see for yourself. Gibson never gives quot;a dealquot;. There is always a catch.

The Raw Power mostly just makes me miss the Smartwood series, but it's definitely one of the cooler offerings in the current lineup. I say go for it.

The RP is a Standard with EMG's (the older ones came with a 490/498 set I belive), and a satin (nitro) plain finish. They all had a 60's neck which is the ONLY thing besides the pickup I don't like about them. They are great guitars but I strongly urge you to play it before you buy it.

does it have binding? If it didnt wouldnt it technically just be a studio lp?

They don't have flame tops. They do however have binding.

I actually like natural colored Les Pauls, and think the Raw Power is one of the best looking newer ones out there.
The my knowledge, the guitar is basically a standard with EMG's, and without the extra finishing steps.

I've looked at it myself and find it very appealing.
