I was reading a thread on another board concerning differences of old SD's vs new. The tone of the thread was that the old were far superior. One guy even scrificed an old one to see and discovered the bobbins at least were identical.
From what I could tell everyone of the opinion the older one were superior seemed to be comparing new vs memory of old or old vs new in different instruments.
I have no idea if there is any differences. I would think that the differences woud be no different than between any two examples of the same model. Much speculation about changing to cheaper materials etc. One person even claimed that SD's ex-wife owns the productions lines and Seymour owns the Custom Shop. Not sure what that has to do with anything.
I thought maybe Evan or one of the other SD family would care to comment on any technical reasons that might change over time. I'm sure this must have come up before.
Anyway, I'm done rambling. Just an intriguing topic.
In seems like in musical gear, most people always think older stuff is always alot better than newer stuff. Hence all the rage for vintage gear. I dont always agree. Some new things are better, some old things are better. Sometimes they are equal. Your ears are the only things that can tell you which is better. Someone elses prefference for what ever reason cant tell your ears which is better.
I think some guys use that in their Ebay description, just to get decent money for old pickups with scratches or tarnished pole pieces. If there's any difference, it would be that the old one's magnet is very slightly de-gaussed, but probably not enough to even hear the difference. I'd like to hear what Evan or Seymour would have to say about this.
Something tells me that this is one of those quot;it sounds better if you know that it shouldquot; things.
