I have noticed in some of the photos board members post that some guitars are missing the trem cover. I remember Yngwie Malmsteen seemed to always have his removed.

I was watching a show on VH1 called Metal Mania and noticed in quite a few videos that trem covers were also absent.

What's up with this? Does it have anything to do with resonant or tonal qualities? Is it just a quot;coolquot; look that so many have taken up? or are trem covers in such short supply that when one loses theirs, they might as well forget ever finding a replacement?

I keep my trems floating on all my strats and when the strings are off iholes in the trem cover and the holes in the trem block don't line up real well and it's a pain to put strings on...that's the only good reason I have for leaving them off...

ive never had a strat with a trem cover but I believe they get removed because they inhibit string damping

I can't think of anyone playing a Strat with the cover on.

I do remember that Albert Collins played his Tele with the 'ashtray' on.

That reminds me, do tele's still come with the ashtray's or do you have to buy them seperate?

I took mine off my Peavey because the Hipshot stuck out too far. It's still in place on the Jackson, unless the lemurs did something with it.

Agt; you mean quot;backplatequot; trem covers are different.

I have mine off too, TGWIF pretty much sums it up, and it does look cool, and its just mainy easier to make adjustments.

I don't think anything but the quot;vintagequot; models have that style bridge anymore. I could be entirely wrong. And I'm too lazy and my head hurts too much to call GC to ask.

No, I mean quot;trem coverquot;. The plastic plate that covers the trem springs on the back of a guitar, usually a quot;stratquot; type.

Such as this.Listed on ebay as a trem cover.

On my strat the trem cover has slots cut in it to allow you to adjust the spring tension without removing the cover. Brilliant idea actually.

I always thought those were called back plates. Do Strats even offer the trem cover (ashtray) option?

I don't think removing it is going to alter the tone. Some players seem to think to so, but I don't know how it could make a [noticeable] difference.
