Long time ago i read Jeff Beck has his strats wired with the tone controlls a bit different... he has the tone controlls wired for the Bridge and Middle pickups... He claims to turn the tones down until all 3 pickups sound about the same and then makes adjustments from there... He uses this setup to get treble boosts when needed..
Anyone tried this? I did a long time ago but never really played around with it that much to see if it works for me... Thinking of trying again

if I understand this correctly, you mean that he has the first tone controlling the neck, and the second controlling the middle and bridge
this is an easy mod - it just requires a jumper on the switch - and this is how the current model of US strats are wired
here's a pic of the mod, from Stratdeluxer:I have alsr read the same thing but as for turning them all the way down, thet is a recent thing...back in the day he did the mod to have a tone control on his bridge pickups as well, but he used them like most other people on the last 3 records he has started turning them all the way down, then he set his Marshall DSL with no bass or midrange as well as treble and presence full on.
I have my Strats with aton control on the bridge...one of them is set of with master volume, neck tone and bridge tone (the Middle pickups is quot;wide openquot; with no tone control) and I really like it, my other strat is a 2 knob...master volume and bridge tone with the neck and middle quot;wide openquot;...a never use the ton controls on anything except the bridge and to be honest I lean pretty damn hard on the bridge pickup but it HAS to have a ton control to roll of jut a wee bit of the highs. FWIW, Eris Johnson, and Jimmy Vaughan also have tone controls on the bridge pickups. Eric has the neck tone and then a middle/bridge tone while Jimmy has the neck tone and the bridge tone with the middle quot;wide openquot;.

here's a pic of the mod, from Stratdeluxer:Well what i heard was he has no tone controll on the neck Pickup but has one on the Middle and one on the Bridge.... This way he can make the Middle and Bridge pickups warmer... An interview i read says Jeff has been doing this little mod for years.... Feels Fender had the Tone controlls backwards...

It sounds kind of cool.... I hear when it's set up right and use your amp a little differently you can use your Bridge's tone controll kind of like a treble boost for solos... That is the one thing i do not like about my Tex/Mex strat is the bridge postion is awful bright.... Mind you that whole guitar has always been very bright sounding. Think i'll try the Tone mod and see what happens..... It's simple enough to do... and undo... i'll do it this weekend.

I don't know if the tone control thing mentioned above is true or not...but I do know that Jeff uses a Rat Pedal and leaves it on pretty much all the time and rarely turns it off. Similar to the way Satriani and Vai use/used a Boss DS-1 left to quot;onquot; pretty much all the time. So whatever Beck's doing with the volume and tone control settings on his guitar is being done in conjunction with using the Rat as a boost pretty much all the time and rarely turning it off. Lew
Here's a cool interview with his tech:
from : localhost/found this interview while looking:
from : localhost/this bit was funny. Fairy guitars, indeed:
DJN: Did you use a Jackson Soloist on quot;Flashquot;?
JB: Yeah.
DJN: Why was that?
JB: I dunno - I liked the look of it! It just didn't work out, you know, it's , umm...It's a fairy guitar, really! It's too soft and spongy and even when a power chord is hit I could feel the vibration in the bridge. And it was just...You couldn't hit it too hard because it would go all over the place. The neck's too long but, uhh, nevertheless, umm, by staying with it for that whole project I managed to get some sounds out of it. The quot;Ambitiousquot; solo was the Soloist, the Jackson, and I can't play that on any other guitar so, you know...There's some notable things that came out of it.
That's the Jackson guitar with the Kahler. What Beck says is absolutely true and the reason I've always disliked the Kahler vibrato: it's spongey and just as bad as Beck says it is...even though some players insist it's not.
Thanks for the link to the interview with Beck's tech! Sound slike he's no longer using the Rat Pedal. Interesting...I thought it was still an integral part of his sound. He's using a Snarling Dog Wah Wah and hotter than normal John Suhr Fender Noiseless pickups too. Wow...good stuff!
Jeff ditched the Rat when he got those DSL Marshall amps...

Yeah, the one that Tina turner scratched her signature into. He also had an orange soloist with a floyd.
