Can someone give me some help with MIDI? I always hear about it but never took the time to understand it. The only thing I know about it is that my keyboard has MIDI out.

Also, I know you can control effects with it somehow.

MIDI = Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It has been around for a long time. It was developed as a standard communications protocol for electronic musical instruments. It will transmit musical pitch and volume from a keyboard to other keyboards, synths, or PCs. FX units use it to transmit amp; receive patch selections amp; other expression parameters.
