How would you compare these 2 amps?
These 2 amps are voiced completly different from each other. Both are great. The Vox is going to give the vintage vibe and the Marshall is going to forte the modern rock tone. For the quot;tonequot;, I pick the VR30. Its hard to beat that hybrid technology, especially when you compare it to a soildstate. Nothing wrong with solidstate, it just has limitations. The Marshall would be better for the modern stuff over the Vox, but it all depends on what you are looking for.
A more fair comparison would be the:
Vox VR30
vs
Marshall AVT20
I'd go with the VOX cos i love the vox sound but it matters what ur uses r (like i wouldn't use the vox for NU-METAL)
I much prefer Marshall sounds over Vox... but the MG range is really pretty stinky...
Never tried the Vox but i own an MG, it does the job, but doesn't really do the job well, cleans are ok but uninspiering (sp?) and o/d is useable but buzzy and lifeless. For a practice amp to use at home and maybe take to a mates house every now and then i would say its ok, its given me good reliability and the onboard FX can be fun to mess around with, but for a serious amp i would definately look around before buying one.
Compare?
OK...
they are both buzzy and fuzzy sounding most of the time
The Vox has much better low end
Neither one of them sounds like a Marshall
The Vox can actually get one or two good tones...the Bassman and Dumble clean...
Buy a Line 6...(god, I'd never thought I would have said that)
Seriously..the MG's are just not very good soudning amps..they are very buzzy and thin (unlike like older Marshall SS tech)...I played 2 of them again last week, and was just so....ready to vomit ..LOL
The Vox really needs a 12quot; speaker...spend a bit more and upgrade to the 50 watt VOX...its not a buzzy and def sounds better...with the variable wattage you can still turn it down to a whisper.
The Line 6 Spider II 30/75 does a better Marshall sound than either....though it's not so good when ya crank it...they are practice amps that give a decent sound at bedroom to low-moderate volumes.
The 15/30/50 watt VT VOXes are not too reliable either. Most of the review sites online will give ya the lowdown.
I've never played the Vox, but I voted for it. The Marshall MGs are horrible.
MG's are not horrible. They are good amps at a good price. Of course, it is your typical solid state sound. Thin, a little fizzy, and whatnot. However, with some tweaking on both your amp and guitar controls, you can find some inspiration in these circuits.
With my MG100DFX I use in my bedroom, I have OD2 clicked in with the gain set around 10:30 and a SD-1 in the chain. Rolling off the guitar's volume and tone controls gently allows me to get some pretty creamy tones.
It's all in your patience and knowledge of how to work with an amp. I still don't consider it great by any means, but no one looking for a good practice amp should overlook the MG Series.
EDIT: The on-board effects and reverb are also pretty damn good!
I would think the Vox is better for cleans (then say a line 6) cos Vox built the AC30 so naturally cleans r good. But for high gain sound probably line 6 (with chanells like Metal and Insane(
