I had been using 9-42's Fender strings, but the unwound strings sounded very twangy when unplugged. Then, I tried the 10-46 Fenders. Good sound but still twangy sounding.
This morning I put on a set of DR Pure Blues 10-46's. Very nice sounding strings. No more twang. They are less bright but have a full meaty tone. I think I'm gonna like these strings. The string sizes are the same as the Fender 10 set, but the DR's feel thicker and heavier.

So, I went into a local guitar store to buy strings. The guy tries to sell the long lasting Elixirs to me. They were too much at $14 a set. I said I wanted to try the DR's. The guy says, quot;Ya, alot of people like those strings. I don't know why!quot; Then, I suggested that I was considering Ernie Ball strings also. Again he says, quot;Ya, alot of people like those strings. I don't know why!quot; What is up with that!?
I picked up a set of the DR's paid and ran.
What's wrongy withy twangy??
quot;It don't mean a thang if ya can't make it twangquot;

Are they a pure nickel wrap?
I just got a few sets of pure nickel Gibson Strings (les Paul, iirc?) that I'm gonna try on my Hamer to cut some quot;twangquot;. I've been through so many strings and I've never tried a pure nickel one....we'll see

Yes. I just put a set of the Pure Blues 12-52's on my ES-175, and they sound great. I bought a set of SIT Jazz lights (nickel, 12-52) with the DRs, so I'm gonna try those before I settle on the DRs, though.
These are the first nickel strings I've tried, and I'm never going back. They sound like new strings without that nasty ass brightness.

Yes. Pure nickel. I obviously didn't realize how big a difference strings can make. These DR's are great sounding. They are a bit heavier than I am used to playing. I'll have to ease into them carefully.
Cool...thats what I've always heard about pure nickels. Will get them on the Hamer this weekend and see!
what's wrong with twang? i love twang

Jeff, if you like what everybody is saying about them, you're gonna love 'em!Originally Posted by drew half emptywhat's wrong with twang?
Nothing, unless you don't want twang

On a Tele, through a Bassman yes...
On an Explorer through a 2203...errmm....not so much
Unfortunately the Dr Pure Blues die quite fast...
Guys on this forum turned me onto DR a little over a year ago, and I believe I will never have to search for another brand again. The Pure Blues 10 set are on everything except the LP, which seemed to prefer the Tite Fits.
I might have to try those. I tend to go cheap with D'Addario 3 packs, just so I can string up more guitars for the $.
The Fender strings are perfect for vintage strat tones. The DR's give a more quot;modernquot; tone. Is that a good way of saying it? I think the DR Pure Blues would be perfect on an Explorer or Les Paul.
I use fender bullets (11's) on all my trem equipped guitars. I have ernie ball skinny top/heavy bottoms (10-53) on my Hamer Archtop. Sounds really bluesy there.
I've been playing DR 9-46s for over 10yrs now and can't seem to go back to anything else. To me they sound better, last longer, and just feel great. I buy them buy the case now, all of my guitars (3 strats and 2 Wolfgangs) are strung with them. Great strings!!!
I love the Pure Blues but my guitar tech hates them. I have no idea why? I think they sound a feel great, they hold up well too.
On Sunday I put my last set of Gibson Brite Wires on the Hamer as the D'Addario and Boomers were breaking left and right...The Brite Wires have been the toughest, longest lasting strings I've tried yet...
but I put the Gibson quot;les paulquot; strings on tonight to try...pure nickel wrap...they have the silk threaded ball ends...I gotta say I'm impressed...def very little of that quot;new string twangquot; or brittle harshness...very warm sounding like they were already broke in, and I'd swear my sustain has improved a bit..they are still very clear and articulate..but it's like the very highest (annoying) frequency you can hear is rolled off a tad. They still bite and scream...but are just a little sweeter. They are staying in tune quite well. Hope they have the longevity of the Brite Wires. they also are more elastic...meaning...not easier or harder to bend...but they seem to have just the right amount of tension...or recovery maybe...spongy feel..but not in bad way.
I used to always buy the cheapest strings I could find...Boomers..D'Addarios, slinkys, markleys, etc..I've been paying more for the Brite Wires since I started using them, but they have saved me money in the long run!
I'm def gonna give those DR strings a whirl next time though...I'm impressed by these pure nickel wraps..great tone and feel!
ive been using the pure blues and tite fits for a while and what ive noticed is that the pure nickle strings have a stiffer feel to them vs the nickle wrap steel. i love my dr strings and between those two i can get whatever i need
