I just got back from rehersal and trying my strat with a Custom trembucker in the bridge. The highs are not as bright as the 59 but lacks the roundness of the bottom on a 59. Much to my surprise it had the midrange honk of the jb. At first it was kind of cool, but after a while that's all I could hear was the midrange and it drove me nuts trying to get rid of it (adjusting the amp). This is the exact reason I dislike the JB, so this weekend project will be to remove the custom and replace it with the 59. I rather have it too bright than too midrangey.
Have you tried a screamin' demon?
Maybe you'd like the C5. Tonewise, it's similar to the 59 with higher output and smoother highs.
Sounds like you would want a Custom 5! It has good highs and sort of a scooped mid! A simple magnet swap from the ceramic in the custom to an alnico 5 would get it done for you. Thats the only difference in the custom 5 and the Custom. If you want to swap magnets, I may be interested!
You probably have ears that are tuned into Alnico 5's. C-5, 59, Jazz, and JB.
If your preference is for that sound, you should hear all those pickups, and make a decision as to which one responds to your amp the best.
