Good idea? Any suggestions would be great. I'm trying to be like Matt Bellamy/Johnny Greenwood. And don't bring that quot;get what you think is goodquot; BS, I live in South Africa and it is damn near impossible to find equipment to test out in the first place, not to mention actually buy it.

I really like the aerodyne tele. The stock pickups are pretty good, from memory. The pickups you suggest would sound great, but I have a feeling that for the style you play a bridge humbucker might be a better fit. Perhaps a lil'59...

P-90s are wider than humbuckers- pole to pole, and humbuckers are wider- coil to coil than P-90s. It would take some considerable engineering to make that work...hardly worth it IMO. If you want a Tele with a P-90, check out the Squier Custom Tele. You could get a new bridge and put a Phat Cat in.

Big Black, a Aerodyne tele comes with a p90 in the neck.

go for a sp90-1n. first, the tone is killer. second, it has a much lower output than the sp90-2n. you would want something with less output in the neck to match up with a qp in the bridge.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Hot_Grits, the lil '59 sounds like an option, but I don't want to lose the Tele twang; I play a lot of Spanish-style stuff for which that sound is essential for me. I need: good hollow-sounding cleans (I imagine the middle position or the p90 alone would do this); fat distortion with reasonable low-end (once again, middle position); and a twangy, bitey, harmonic-rich tone (which the bridge pup should be able to handle).

Not to quote the SD website or anything, but

So doesn't that mean they would go together well? I apologize, I'm still a relative noob to the workings of pups. I bow down to the superior wisdom of y'all on this here thread.

PS And besides, Matt Bellamy has a SP90-2n in his most-used custom guitar.

bump

i got me one aerodyne strat. i really like it.
you can use it for old-style rock, bluesrock and i think everything you like.
great sustain and good output.
try out the tele aero in the shop and tell us what you think.

The Aerodyne Tele is a great guitar as is. The bridge and middle pickup positions are all Tele, the neck position is vintage LP Special. I played one of these a couple months ago, and it was reeeeeeeeeeeally hard to put it down and walk away. I just couldn't justify it at the time, having bought a Gamp;L ASAT two weeks earlier (almost wish I had waited).

Besides the sound, the guitar is built extremely well and plays wonderfully. Good weight balance, fit and feel are tops. It felt like an old friend from the first note.

i guess it boils down to personal preference. i am sure the qp can compete with humbuckers and hot (as in output. not referring to the hot p90 specifically) p90s in a similar position. i prefer lower output pickups in the neck. they sound much clearer and there is more room for control to balance them with a bridge pickup.

that said, p90s are mids-intensive pickups and the hot p90 neck has an eq of 6/6/5 lows/mids/highs. the pulled-back highs will emphasize the mids and lows; and mids can actually caused a pickup to be perceived as louder. it may be too overpowering in terms of volume (not output voltage) in the neck position even with a tele lead pickup such as the qp.

and that's the reason i suggested a vintage p90 neck to match the qp. if going for the hot p90, you may have to adjust it much lower than necessary to match the qp and thus, missing the sweet spot but ymmv. if the hot p90 is a must, try coupling it with a lil' 59.

fwiw, i tried both hot tele lead and qp and i don't find their output differ by much. one of my teles has a hot lead and vintage p90 and i just manage to balance them out without sacrificing tone.

btw, i tried the aero tele and its a kicka$$ guitar. you should go for it.

just my .02 and i hope it helps.

Thanks, dani. You're a great help. I think the Vintage sounds good, based on your reasoning. I'll wait for more opinions before I decide though.

Now that is what I wanted to hear. Matt's guitars are based on a cross between - you guessed it - an LP and a Tele. And Johnny G plays a Tele as well, so I'm waxed. I'll keep the stock pups around for a while; I don't have the bucks to upgrade them just for fun.

Just in case anyone has anything to add... As far as distortion goes, I'll be using fuzz and a whammy pedal a lot of the time. Will the QP/Vintage P90 sound good with that kind of gain?

sounds cool
