Just curious as he gets a really nice tone out of his 62 or 63 I think Strat.
I know alot of it is his playing style(SRV)setup, pedals, etc but man it sounds awesome!!!!!
Played on American Idol tonite.
Stock pickups?Anyone know?
Thanx
63 Strat and more than likely the stock pickups...He's a SRV wanna be (Or was) and I'm sure he'd stick with the stock pickups like SRV did...

SRV was a great guitarist whereby to model one's playing. Can't fault Kenny Wayne for that. We're all a quot;wanna be somethingquot;. right?
A classic Strat with stock pickups I am finding out is a great musical tool.
He plays Fuchs amps too, that'll help ya get a nice tone .
In the past, he's said that he isn't the type of person that changes out pickups all the time to try different things. He has received some from the Fender Custom shop, but in the end he uses the stock true vintage pickups or the stock pickups in his custom shop/reissue strats.
MJ
That tone is the definitive tone of an alder bodied strat, rosewood fretboard, and the neck pickup has to be an Alnico 5, 6.3K. That means you want a very edgy clean tone, a good overdrive, and an alder strat with a set of Surfers, Fralins, Lollars, Chubtones, Fender Fat 50's etc.
For that SRV/Mayer/KWS sound, it's the alder/rosewood/6.3K A5 neck pickup that gets it. And of course, a cranked tube amp and any string gauge 10 or higher.
I really like the strat that he was using. Really cool graffiti design.
I can't find a picture of the strat he was using on american idol. do you have pic of it? I want that strat he was using.

Pretty much total agreement...maybe doesn't have to a rosewood fingerboard, IMO...maple would probably be fine too. But in terms of pickups: 6K to 6.4K Antiquity Surfers, SSL-1's or Fralin Vintage Hots will nail that tone.
