I've done as much reading as I can, and it seems to me that the APH-1 (Alnico II Pro) is very, very similar to the EVH 78 Custom shop pickup (for the Bridge spot).

What are the differences? It would seem that the EVH78 may be slightly hotter? (about 8.5k ohms vs 7.85k ohms for the APH-1?)

Or does the EVH78 have *slightly* more treble? If so, why? Does the EVH78 have more winding? Or does it use a thicker wire, or what?

Are the magnets in the APH-1 and EVH78 nearly identical?

I've heard the '78 is about 10k in output...

EDIT: I've got a '78 (EVH) at home that came in the mail today as soon as I get off work I will be installing it and posting some reviews 'n what not late tonight.

Rock On!!!!

No, the 78 is not 10K in output! It is about 8.75 or so standard! I am sure MJ has wound them hotter by request though!

I would say the 78 has more lower mid than the APH and has a bit warmer sound than the APH.

BTW, if you are interested in the 78 (A.K.A) EVH, just save your money and get a Custom Custom! The 78 and the CC sounds almost alike IMO! The CC just has a tad bit more output.

Hey! ~ Thanks! Buddy!

Theodie.. in your opinion, the Custom-custom sounds most like the EVH? Here's the legendarytones article which talks about how the resitance of that pickup at 14.4k is a bit high:

from : localhost/would seem, at least by specs, that the APH-1 would be the most similar to the EVH? (7.95k and alnico II's)
(The point is to go with a standard pickup and not pay big for a custom one)

The CC does not sound at all like a 14.4 though it is. I have one, and it is an excellent match for with the APII.

Resistance is one of the worst numbers to go by when choosing a pickup! Its means next to nothing when tone is involved IMO! Its just how much copper is around the bobbins, thats about it! TRUST me, The EVH sounds VERY close to the CC!! Its not worth wasting you money bro! I had a CC for a while and I got an EVH shortly after I got rid of the CC. The first thing I said to myself was, quot;damn, this pickup sounds alot like the CC didquot;!!!

BTW, here is a good read for you, from : localhost/the APH is alot closer in specs to the EVH and so is the Pearly gates but, there are ALOT more factors that go into pickups than DC resistance and magnet type. The CC is ALOT closer in sound! I guarntee you that!!!!
