I recently bought a guitar at a rummage sale for 8 bucks.
Aside from some chips, scratches, and small gouges, the guitar is in excellant shape. It still plays very well. For 8 bucks, I figured it'd be perfect as a project piece to work on. The only problem is, I don't know what the heck the guitar is. My friend suggested that it was a Silvertone, but he wasn't quite sure. I Googled the model number on the back (759-1436-1), and got nothing. My friend suggested I come here and ask around. So, if anyone knows, I'd love some help. :P
I dunno what it is, but I'll give ya 10 for it.
I can see how that would be a great thing to mod. It's pretty ugly in its current state, but replacing the pickguard and the electronics would help out a lot. I like the body colour.
I have no idea what it is though.
Welcome to the forum!!
I don't have a clue what it is, but I feel like playin some surf music all of a sudden. Try taking off the pickguard and see if anything's written inside. For what it's worth, I wouldn't make it a project guitar....I dig it the way it is right now.

hahaha, eloquently put, but none the less correct.
As far as what is.. I'm of now use.
I think Teisco of Japan made some stuff like that in the 60's but I don't know for sure. Try looking that name up and see what you get. Good luck...-JG
DING, DING, DING we have a winner!!!
It is a Teisco
Cool. I have a Teisco lap steel that my father gave me. I checked it out on the internet and I thought I remembered seeing some similar guitars on there. That is a great buy for 8 bucks.
Yeah, it's a Tiesco. A friend of mine has a three-pickup model of that one, natural finish. The pickups are microphonic like a MF'er. $8 is a heck of a deal...I thought she did well paying $40 for hers.
Kind of reminds me of a cheap guitar I saw in a pawn shop a few years ago. The pickups looked like an engine. It was one crazy ugly looking beast of an instrument.
I love it. For 8 bucks, you really can't go wrong...
hey, don't let David Lindley see that thing ... he'll be jealous
what you have there, my friend, is a quot;pawn shop prizequot;, or more correctly, a rummage sale steal, etc ....
like Jolly said, just leave it alone. Get a new set of strings (I'm guessing 9s might be best on that), and just set it up a little. If the action's a little high, maybe get some 10s, tune it to open G and play slide on it.
plug it into a small tube amp and *CRANK* it!!!
and make sure to wear your finest polyester
uh ... seriously ... it looks like it's in great shape, so you have a good story to tell ... how many of us can say we have an $8 guitar?
Ry Cooder has said that his favorite pickup was one he took from a Teisco and put in a strat, so some of those can sound pretty good.
do a search on Ebay for Teisco, and you will find quite a few
that thing screams J - ROCK!!
$8.00 guitar = good times!
Dead on, it's a Teisco Firstman. Thanks for the help, guys. I really do think it's a beautiful guitar, so instead of stripping it and completely repainting it and so on, I think I'm going to restore it to it's original look, maybe modify it slightly. One of the pickups is in kind of poor shape, but I swear the thing has a better sound than my strat... which kind of gets me thinking. My room mate called me a blasphamer for playing a little halen on it. He calls it the quot;Beach Babyquot;.
Anyways. thanks for the help guys!

Funny your roommate said that considering Eddie played a Teisco Del Ray on quot;Finish What Ya Startedquot;. He even straped it on for the video.
As odd a shape as they are, some cool sounds come outta them.
I like old odd guitars..... i have few like this thing in the basement.... one of them turned out to be worth some money... a 1959 Goya in red metal flack.... I have a vintage dealer offering $500 for it.... I have a weird stop sign shaped guitar down there as well..... it is plywood... may be a Framus but i'm not sure.....
Whofan
You'll drive yourself crazy trying to replace those pickups but the folks at SD can rewind those to the specs of your choosing.
I woundn't rework that guitar too hard, it's cool just the way it is.
Robert's right ...
whatever the problem is with your pickup, it's likely a fairly simple fix or an affordable rewind
I'd give the Custom Shop a call ... note that in a month or so, it will take longer to get CS work done, as they'll likely be very busy gearing up for winter NAMM.
Somebody should make a neck-through version of that, the bolt-on heel is just nasty.
