I am trying to put together a list of legendary heavy guitar tones in the history of heavy metal and albums that represent such tones.
For example, one such tone has got to be the mesa-boogie rectifier tone. But what CD do you think really exemplifies this tone? Perhaps Metallica's quot;And Justice for All?quot;
Another example would be the Marshall jcm tone, but what CD exemplifies this? Maybe Ozzy (Randy Rhoads) Diary of a Madman?
Additionally if you could recommend a seymour duncan pickup best to handle such a tone that would be great...
I realize people will differ on the choices for all of these categories, but any input will be helpful for me. THANKS in advance.
So what I need is a list like this:
Tone:-----Band:---------Representative CD:---Pickup:
----------------------------------------------------
Rectifier---Metallica------And Justice for All-----Emg 81
Marshall---Ozzy (Rhoads) Diary of a Madman----???
The rectifier didn´t even go into production until almost half a decade after AJFA, that was all Mark IVs.. a definite NO there....AJFA WAS the best example ever of how to hide a bass in the mix and scoop the mids out of guitars, though
I think the biggest problem is that there are too many great tones to be had from any Combo.... Alone my JCM can do anything grom Ozzy to Meshuggah if I have the right doodads in front of it..... I think many aren´t really going to be able to quot;definequot;! one specific tone that quot;definesquot; an amp

hmmmm.. well Metallica is a good place to start. i like the St. Anger tone. many pple will disagree, but who cares. check out their older albums too.
there are tons of bands out there really... slayer , BLS (pinch harmonics tone)..

Actually, Metallica didn't start using the Mark IV's until work on 'Metallica' came out. It was still strictly Mark IIC 's pumping out juice.
yeah, BLS is a pretty good pissed-off JCM 800 tone, but theres an SD-1 in there too..
i cant really think of any truly representative ones atm, weird..
tom
wait - inflames - EMG 85/85 into a 5150... great example
tom
Dimebag Darrell: Modern Metal Tone: SH-13 or BL XL-500
Randall RG100 and Furman PQ-3.
Enough said.
Here's Randy Rhodes setup according to Guitar Geek.

Sepultura-Roots, there's your Dual Rectifier sounding it's best!
thanks....more .... more ... more .... I am a tone junkie.....
Err... (distracted by your avatar, too), does Jimmy Page qualify?
megadeth- rude awakening i think daves running a JMP-1 into a EL34 power amp....cant think of marshall's name for that poweramp though. anyway, this just defines damn good tone for me
yeah that avatar is quite distracting, i like the dimebag one myself
