If you could only afford one effect for your home recording studio, would you get a compressor or an EQ, and why.

Thanks everyone.

To make anything resembling a quality recording, you are going to need both.

I definitely plan on getting both, but to start with, which one would be the one to get first.

You know, I forgot about this but I have Sonar 5, which has compressors and EQs. Since I already have these effects, I really don't need outboard units do I, unless I don't like the sound. I've got the mic preamps already.

Anyone? Pretty please with sugar on top?
Compression with out a doubt! You need to record the best signal you can without clipping or overloads. EQ can be added later.
