How much difference do caps make? I just got some Sprague orange drops form Lew as Ive heard these are good, but I about freaked when I saw how big they are. Why are they bigger than most? My bud says I should forget the caps and tone controls and go volume only as this is his preference. any thoughts??

I heard much more complexity to the highs and mids when switching from the stock ceramics to Orange Drops. I imagine the Spragues will have a similiar, if more marked change in your situation.
BTW, your buddy's crazy. Good caps, tone controls, and the ability to use them can make your sound go from good to great.

I had a chance to play around with some caps last night. I swapped between stock ceramic disks in my PRS and Hovland music caps at .022 and could tell no audible difference. I am starting to think people are hearing what they want to hear when swapping caps. I know Lew did a test between Orange drops and Hovlands but I decide to test ceramics to Hovs and nothing.

The size difference is due to the materials used. Capacitance is related to the size of the plates and the size and conductance of the material between them. They may be able to get a tighter tolerance with larger plates and a different insulator.
