I really did not want to modify my SL bridge, which I really really like, but I took it out of my tele, and put it back in my Les Paul.. and I figured I'd take the cover off, just to experiment - then, behold, I discovered zebra colored bobbins which match my 59n.
It sounds a little more sensitive without the cover. I thought that the highs would be a little raspier.. maybe they are.. not sure after using the a2pro for a while, which is more of a trebly pickup..
Bottom line = cool
cool, bro ... does going topless change its resistance to microphincs at all?
cheers

I cranked it up pretty well yesterday and did not have any microphonics issues. I will try out a couple distortion pedals and a volume boost to see if I have any feedback problems. Good question
I removed the nickel cover of the Seth Lover neck pickup in my Hamer Monoco and found double cream coils and that I liked the tone better without the cover. It's a little brighter and it seems to have more quot;kissquot; or presence to the treble. However, since the Custom Custom in the bridge position has the nickel cover and the guitar looks better to me with the covers on, I went ahead and re-installed the nickel cover back onto the Seth...just for appearance. I've never had any trouble with whistling or microphonics with that Seth, BTW, cover or no cover. Lew
Lew, do you know if Seth Lover sets always have the same bobbin colors underneath, or is it hit or miss. I'd hate to unsolder a set and find that one is zebra and the other is creme.
It's hit or miss, just like the old 50's Gibson pafs. Some are black, some are zebra, some are reverse zebra and some are double cream. I remove two of the the four screws under the pickup that hold the bobbins to the metal base and look into the holes. I can usually see the color of each bobbin without having to remove the cover. You can also screw one of the polepieces out and peek into that hole to see the color of that bobbin. Lew
As Lew suggests, you can tell the colour of the bobbins by removing screws - polepiece screw and one of the baseplate screws on the other coil. The cream colour is easily noticeable. Double cream Seths here.
I may take the cover off my Seths one of these days...I reall suspect it's just the cover causing my problem. I'm not sure how I like the idea of a Goldtop LP with double creams.
I may however take the cover off the 59' in the bridge of my Standard, and leave the neck nickle....ala Jimmy Page.
Seth Lovers are my favorite PUs . I own 4 bridge ones , one is double cream, 2 are zebra and one is black !
I kept DC and zebras uncovered and put an aged cover on the black one .
I also found a zebra set underneath Antiquity covers ! Really nice in my PRS Amber singlecut !
I recorded a little clip without the cover, and uploaded it to the tips and clips board here .. just for the heck of it.
Here's the clip
SL uncovered, 59n, Les Paul, Marshall 1987x
Great stuff as always Stevo!
