I like the JB but still wondering about a slightly different EQ, a bit higher highs. Is the Dimarzio FRED pretty much like the JB - spiked upper mid? Or a more open sound? How does it compare output-wise (I find the JB about perfect, just enough to juice my tweed champ, not overwhelm it).

The Fred output is less than the JB, infact I wouldn`t even compare them in anything similar. Two totally different pickups.

I`ve read many fine inputs about the WCR Shredder pickup. It`s supposed to be the KING JB, but be prepared to lay down some dough.

I`m currently running an older JB, I love it but I`m in the market for the Hercs. Just my 2cents

I like the FRED...I'm a Satch fan through and through and his tone is great on his later stuff where his is using his FRED/Paf Pro Ibanez. If you dig his tone it'd be worth a try.

I have a FRED in one of my Jacksons and the way i set my amp it sounds nothing like Satch. FRED DP153, A5, 305mv, EQ: H 5.5, M 6, L 5, its a very even eqquot;d pickup. Its kinda like a Screamin Deamon IMO, less bite and more growl. But if your looking for a hotter PAF tone try the Breed neck model in the bridge, thats what i have in my single hum Charvel. Good luck.

If the FRED is based off of the PAF Pro it's not going to have that upper mid spike that the JB has....very different sound. I'd be willing to bet the mids are much more centered on that pickup.

OK thanks all, FRED sounds like it might work...just got one on ebay, need to find an inexpensive axe so I can do a man-a-mano vs my SG with the JB
