I was looking at Gretsch Duo Jet w/ bigsby on the net adn i think i have found what i am looking for. I really want well a ricky type sound but with slightly more grunt and more versatility and i think this is is. What do people think about the Duo Jet (with Filterons)?. I want to play surf, brit pop, rockabilly, rock and roll (well a bright jangly sound really)
A Gretsch Duo Jet or any other Jet in the series is semi hollow. I have had 3 or 4 of them and they don't sound as quot;openquot; or quot;janglyquot; with the Filter 'Trons as you may want like the Ric. Put some Hilo TRons or Dynasonics in it and it might be a different story. TV Jones will have the best aftermarket pups for this. Depending on what amp you use you should be able to pull of good ol' rock, pop and some surf. I reccomend the TV Jones Classics for Filter 'Trons, but someone else will need to chime in on the Hilo Trons and Dynas. Great choice in guitar though!!!
Ok because I have seen Jets with dynasonics do they have more output than rickenbacker p/ups
My only problem is cost
I have heard that the electromatic pro jet is not semi hollow and is chambered instead. But the Electromatic Elliot Easton is semi hollow but comes with humbuckers.
Does anyone know what size they are (can i replace them with dynas or maybe humbucker sized TV'Trons)
Dynasonics absolutely rock! They are extremely versatile, maybe even the most versatile pickups I've heard. The bridge is punchy and has that great single coil clarity without having quite the mid push or raunchiness of a p90. The middle position gets nice jangly, almost strat-like and sounds great with clean rhythm strumming or funk. The neck is very thick and smooth, absolutely great for jazz and fusion.
I've played some Gretsch guitars and I'm not a huge fan of the Filtertrons like I thought I would be. For my taste, Dynasonics are just much more versatile and I feel they are amazing (they're in my Fender Tele-Sonic and they're never coming out ).
I also feel that Gretsch's guitars are overpriced for their quality. Pick up several of them at a store and see how they feel to you, to me the necks just felt like a $500 or less guitar, certainly not $2500 or $3500 like many of them are priced. They definitely have a unique look about them that attracts me, but the feel just isn't there.
I've never played the Duo Jet, I've just played several of their higher end Hollowbody guitars, but one day I will give one a shot myself!
