Hi Guys, after playing for 6 mths or so.. I am considering to change my ORiginal Pickups cuz i really want sth new and cOOL, so i need u guys' help! Thanks alot. Ok For whatever specs i have;
- Ibanez GRX70 [H-S-H Configuration] Everything is unchanged. Original.
-I dun exactly noe what wood izzit made of. Does it make a difference?
-Ok i definitely play punk rock/pop As i really love SP GC Green day, Ataris.. and i was wondering how to get Billy's sound.. So i really really need u guys' help. ANy recommendations? tkS alot DUdes !
Ok, for most of Green Day's career, Billy Joe has been using a JB in the bridge of his Strat. I think that would probably work for you. I'm reasonably certain your guitar has a tremolo on it, so you'll want to be sure and get the TB-4, rather than the SH-4 so the pole pieces will line up with the strings better. The JB has a reasonably high output with lots of high-mids and a solid (but not overly prominent) low end. If you want a little fatter sound than the JB will give you, then you might try a TB-5 Custom. A Jazz Model (SH-2n) is a good match for the JB and the Custom. I don't have much experience with Duncan single coils, so someone else will have to help you out with that.
I believe that your guitar is made out of Basswood, and yes, the wood that a guitar is made out of does make a difference.
By the way, if you post the rest of your rig (amps, pedals, etc) people can give you a better idea of what to get.
Everything DD said is right on
Thanks DD , for ur advice. I have only A peavey rage 128 15W amp. ONe Boss Turbo distortion, DS-2 and One Boss Overdrive OS-2. Can i ask sth? TB-4 And TB-5, do they belong to the neck? middlE? or BrigGE? cuz mine is H-S-H. I don't exactly noe which is which. And which means. i don't know to change all? Or Just one.. also.. ERm, what are Single COils? And what's the difference if the wood is differenT? Tks =) ANd waIT!! What is A JB??
H-S-H stands for Humbucker - Single Coil - Humbucker. You can read about what each is and what the differences between them are at 's Glossary. The SH-4 and TB-4 are both the JB model, one spaced for guitars with tremolos (TB-4) and one spaced for hardtail guitars (SH-4). The SH-5 and TB-5 are both the Custom. Both the JB and the Custom are meant for the Bridge position. The SH-2 Jazz Model that I recommended for the neck spot in you guitar comes calibrated for both the bridge and neck spots, so make sure you get the correct one.
As for the differences in woods, different types of woods resonate differently, causing your guitar to emphasize different frequencies. For example, Maple generally causes a bright tone, while Mahogany causes a rounder, fuller tone. (though there are never any definates in guitar tone - those are just generalizations) Basswood, to my knowledge is similar to Mahogany, but a mite brighter.
oh.. what abt the middle pick-up, u suggested bridge [JB or CUstOM], neck..[SH-2 JAzz model] and middle pick up which is the single coil? not needed?
holy crap.... are you like 12 or something dude?
I would throw the money at a better amp before you upgrade pickups. A better amp will make a much larger and better difference than a pickup swap. If you do infact decide to change pickups, In my opinion the JB is a love it or hate it pickup. I personally hate it with a passion. I love the custom though!!!
Fatigueofheart. I am just a noob thats all k? I am 18 this yr. What's ur problem man? Being so mean?
Reaganz, save for a new amp first, the difference will be HUGE with a good amp.
Then get a JB for the bridge, you do not need to change all the pickups at the same time, it is much cheaper just to change your bridge pickup.
Most pop/punk bands will almost always ONLY use the bridge. Billy Joe didn't use the neck or single coil, just the bridge, so you dont need to go to the expense of changing all the pickups at once.
With a good amp and a JB in the bridge you will have a very good set up for that music.
Ok thanks =) There's only one type of JB righT?

I don´t think he was trying to be mean (at least not intentionally)....
But the Username and title in L337 and/or constant random capital/ lower case and the addition of poor grammar, punctuation, spelling, incomplete sentence structure and half a dozen exclamation points in the title DO make it very easy to make that assumption... admittedly, This is the reason I hadn´t even opened the thread until now... I was convinced I was going to have some whiny respectless internet punk asking a question and then trying to tell me why my answer is BS even though he´s talking out his ass... BTW, I´m pleasantly surprised, welcome to the forum Originally Posted by ReaGaNzOk thanks =) There's only one type of JB righT?
Yes and no....there´s one pickup available in 2 spacings, Trem spaced and standard spaced.
If your E Strings are 2quot; or more apart at the bridge, grab the Trembucker version, aka. TB-4..... For all other applications, the SH-4 will suit you better

That's exactly what I thought...Why the f*** do people type like that?? It's so annoying and it seems like it's harder to type that way too....why spend the effort??
But ditto what you said on the spacing.

LoL, really? I didn't think it was annoying when i posted that.. Sorry.. Haha, btw i do play punk rock =) Thanks lots for that piece of advice and oh yeah. Is it recommended that i change the parts myself? And how much is the piece of pickup. I think i am using trem-spaced[ Just to confirm, its a JB right?] THanks zer =)
If you know how to solder and arent a total fumble-man with a screwdriver, swapping out a pickup isn´t much harder that restringing, and takes about the same amount of time

Again, measure the distance the e strings are apart at the bridge (just take a ruler and lay it across).. anything 2quot; and over you´ll probably be happier with the TB, under stick with the SH

Yes, both the SH-4 (SeymourHumbucker-4) and TB-4 (TremBucker-4) are the JB model
