I've got an Original FR equipped guitar and the low (EAD) strings have a pingy, metally sound that comes out mainly under amp distortion. The same sound I get out of my Strat. Is this caused by the springs?
The setup from the previous owner has 3 springs on the bass string side and 1 on the high E side. Should I take one off the low side where this is prevalent? Also, I've heard putting foam under the springs can help. Has anyone done this? I'd rather hear your input before setting it up again.
Thanks,

How durable are these modern imported fret alloys? Are there brands that are known for better frets for the the money, or are the price points sending mid level (sub $1000 suggested retail = $500/$600 retail) to a mediocre point?
I have a late seventies Gibson, and the frets are massive AND durable. I do not mind the shallower narrow frets (for the $$$), but if I find grooved frets after a few to six years, what is the point? I have narrowed the search to a few imported mfr's like LTD and Epiphone, but if it is going to take the extra cash to buy a lowend USA Gibson guitar...so be it.
Thanks in advance!

So I need help with Stratocaster colors.....
My mind changes every day as to what it should be, so i'll let you guys decide. As sort of an inside joke between my band members it's going to be like Tom Delonge's guitar in that I'm going to have the pickguard with one volume and 1 pickup, I'm eventually going to get an actual pickguard with 2 HB's and various Accoutrements (sp? Idk I felt like being french). It will also have a rosewood fretboard, and a hardtail bridge.
suggestion: hmmm how abt racing stripe on the body and matching headstock colour?

Got a used bargain-price amp a few days ago. For about 90 US$, the used-dealer thought it was solid-state. A discontinued Hughesamp;Kettner quot;Studio 84quot; amp (AKA quot;Tube 20quot;) HOWEVER
When i play bassy notes a bit louder (clean or dirty) I hear an amplified glass rattling sound. I've read that the taller EL84 are prone to rattle. Even with the amp off, if i give a little knock on the top, i can hear the sound of glass (kinda like a tray-full of empty drinking classes being carried down the hall)
It's annoying and pretty loud. But i open things up and carefully had a look-see. Nothing on the valve or its wire-harness seems overtly loose. But being a combo amp, it will vibrate...

Can the wax for repotting pickups be found at the hardware store? Is it parafin wax?
Yup, any good harware store should have it. You need parrafin wax and bees wax. I know you can get the bees wax usually at a good hardware store and possibly you could get the parrifin also. I know you can get parrafin wax at a grocery store.
I think it is a 80/20 mixture of parrafin and bees wax. 80% parrafin and a 20% of bees wax. You could probally get away with using straight parrafin also.

I'm considering letting go of this speaker cab. I used to have a Zinky MOFO head, but sold it and I don't use the cab for anything. Would anyone be interested in buying it? It is in great used shape, works perfectly, and the sound just kills. I can provide pics if someone is interested. I am thinking $250 shipping is a fair price. For what it's worth, you can check out reviews at Harmony Central and read about the cab on the Zinky site:

This is probably a pointless post to many of you but I just thought I'd share it anyway. Everyone always says that EMG's usually make guitars sound the same.
Just a few weeks ago a friend and I modded his LTD F-400's EMG's (dual 81's) for 18 volts because I have the mod in my Ibanez SZ520 (81/60) and I love it. Both guitars are mahogany bodies with maple tops, mahogany necks and rosewood fretboards.
After performing the mod in my kitchen we went downstairs, plugged up my guitar and played a few riffs, a few solos, making sure to get a good earful of the tone. Then we plugged his guitar into my amp and played the same things. And wouldn't you know it, both guitars sounded exactly the same, except for a little bit of added bass because my guitar is thicker. I was actually a little shocked and surprised but at the same time I knew what you guys were saying had to be true. Anyway I didn't really believe the legend until I heard it with my own ears. And there it is.

O.K............I AM the one TGWIF was talking about getting the custom built guitar.
For some reason I can't post the pics, but you can see the entire build done in my MY GUITARS link below.
I've been jonesing for a Firebird FOREVER....but didn't wanna jump into the Gibson QC debacle amp; I wanted something a little different.
