Tonight, I did a preamp tube shootout, just to see what pre tubes are the KING of high gain. The test amp was my extremely good sounding 50W Marshall Jubilee on Jubilee 4-12 w/Vin 30's and Tesla JJ E-34L's (10% higher output than EL-34's)
I actually lined up my whole collection of preamp tubes and started popping them in one after the next in the 1st position. The other 2 are GT12AX7C's.
I listened to the amp's gain from 3 to 10, and listened for thickness, tightness, and sustain on chords and high notes.

I´ve just bought a white JB. My pickguard is aged white. Anybody knows what can I do to match the colours?
Krylon makes spray paint that adhears to plastic called FUSION
Dover white is the one you want

I`ve been looking at a MIM Tele that I`m pretty sure is made of Poplar. How does Poplar compare to Alder or Basswood. What are some good pickup choices for getting a nice warm crunch tone in a Poplar bodied guitar. Single coils,Stacked Single coils,Hums anything you think that would work in the bridge. I`ve read in an old post that Alnico 2 magnets work good in Poplar?
Poplar wood is closer to Alder in tone and weight. It normally has
green streaks in it. It's not really good for translucent finishes. It has
very little grain and a green Hue to it. It's fine for a Opaque finish.

So, how many guitars have you owned over the years including the ones you own now. Last time I counted it was like 150 spanning almost 30 years. Mostly Gibson, Fender, and Gamp;L but I played Ibanez and Kramer pretty hard back in the 80's and had my share of those too. Lately I have been getting into Jackson/Charvel and ESP and most recently Dean. I also have had a couple of Agiles and come and go in the last couple of months - cool guitars for the price incidentally. Just searching for the mojo man
Let's hear about yours!
I still have all of mine, so 5.

I'm checking out a couple of used guitars and I've got it down to these two - Both guitars have similar neck profiles (I love the vintage chunky necks), the taurus has a little more high end zing and the goldtop oozes sexy thick rock tones - what do I do, what do I do?????
Anything else I should be looking at before I lay down a couple grand??
The Goldtop RI is a great bang for the buck, and it's dead sexy. That's my first choice.

I plan on recording one of my band's jams this friday, and I'm taking a Presonus Stereo Preamp, MXL large diaphragm mic, and perhaps an SM57, and my storage will be a portable mini disc recorder that will be run in stereo.
Here's my idea-I can plant the SM57 over the drum set, and the MXL will cover the amps and the sax. Both are cardiod type mics so I'll try to spot out places so that their fields don't collide and the sounds spill over.
If I run one mic for drums and the other for instrumentation into the stereo preamp so it comes out stereo left and right on the mini disc recorder, would it be possible to pan left on my mixer at my studio at home to get just guitars and sax to mix it down into cakewalk Sonar, then pan right and mix the drums down? This way I would record two independent tracks and I would have more control over mastering, etc. Would the idea work?

Im in the middle of looking for pickups for a new guitar that i picked up, one of the agile fat strats. I was looking for a strat style guitar with humbuckers, and i dont think it gets better then. I get that punchy bolt on rhythem that you cant get from a LP. I knew there were cheap pickups in it, and i was expecting to have to replace them, but they dont sound that bad. Im more looking for an overall improvement in the sound. for the bridge im looking for somthing medium-low output, so that i can still have touch sensitivity when i play. I want smooth fat classic lead tones, and crunchy honky PAF rhythem. I know that alnico 2's are known for being smooth, and alnico 5's are known for being tight and bright, so im not sure what to get. Then for the neck i want somthing clear when clean yet chunky and fat when overdriven. so i was thinking the 59 but im still not to sure. and the final part- the neck needs to sound good split, as i realy like the split neck tone. i dont care very much for the split bridge tone, its just way to thin. I have a 5 position switch so i was thinking ofr having it set up sorta like this: Bridge-Bridge/Neck-Bridge/Neck Split-Neck Split-Neck. This would leave me open to getting a Seth for the bridge if it turns out being what i would need.
i think a seth would be a cool bridge pup for what you are looking for
a pearly gates neck, 59n or jazz would be good for the neck

Been damn long since I posted here last time.Anyways...
I found a Tokai that I really fell for on the bay, it's situated in Japan. Have any of you guys imported a guitar from Japan?
It's a KATANA Guitar Auction, so have any of you done business with him? He seem like a very good Ebayer with 99% good feedback or something like that.

Same backing as Rid's post (thanks Mats).
I used a telecaster with a very compressed tone. I didn't really know what to play so I played a lot of notes.
