I'm trading for my first humbucker equiped guitar... trouble is, I've never liked humbuckers. To my ears, they have always sounded like somebody put a blanket over the amp (flame retardant suit)
What would you suggest for the most lively sounding buckers... not necessarily bright, but with some air in there.
The guitar is a mahogany back, flamed maple carved top, with mahogany neck, 25quot; scale.

I might finally be getting a Marshall 1987x if all things go as planned (which, as usual, they will not), but I won't be able to afford a cab for awhile. I am thinking that I should be able to use the speakers from my Peavey combo, this is an okay thing to do for the time being, right? As long as the ohms match up I should be good to go? The combo is a 60 watt tube amp so it should be able to handle the Marshall...
Chris
yup Chris, that should be fine. A nice 4X12quot; cab with speakers of your choice will be a big step up, but until you can afford that, the combo amp speakers should work just fine.

I'm really considering grabbing one of these now, as I've been looking to find a nice Strat. I've heard great things about the neck, hardware, and electronics. The only problem is, none of the stores in my area have one in stock to try out. I'd like to try one out before I buy, but the stores (understandably) won't order one into the shop for someone to just try it out.
What I'm getting at is: Since it is a MIM guitar, is the quality fairly consistent. I've only heard good things about the JV, but I know that the rule of thumb for MIM guitars is try before you buy. This isn't possible. What do you guys think? Shall I take the plunge?
I have played several of them and to be 100% honest they all feel, play and sound about the same IF you get a newer one...there was a while in the 90's where they were made from either Alder or Poplar bodies...I actuallt put a poplar and my alder one head to head and the difference was pretty drastic IMO. Starting in around 01 they are ALL alder...so if you order a new one it will be alder. Other than that they are very constant. If you want to buy used, get the serial number and call Fender with it and they can date it for you...that is the only way to date them, they use a different serial number than almost any other Fender guitar.

I want to buy a fender telecaster. I want to put in two humbuckers. I want a JB in the bridge and a pearly gates in the neck. I dont want to try and cut the pickguard to fit the humbucker myself, I would just like to buy a pickguard pre cut for a humbucker in the neck. I have looked every where and cant find the pickguard I'm looking for. Someone please give me some places on the net to check out. Also do you guys think that would be choice of pickups together? I want it to sound like Nirvana/Led Zeppelin. HELP!
they will make whatever you want. i have 5 pickguards from them and they are good quality with nice clean cuts etc.

Well, I got the pedal back on Wednesday, and spent a couple days playing around with knobs. This pedal is a totally different animal than it was when I bought it. Before, it was a decent distortion box, but it was VERY sensitive to knob placement. There were only a few settings you could dial up that weren't overly fizzy, thin, and brittle. No longer.
The other reviews I have read of John's DS-1 mod are spot on, it sounds like a pissed-off Marshall. The first thing I did was put it in front of a clean channel on my Mesa Rectoverb head, with the volume set to a slight boost, tone around 1 o'clock, and I just played with the gain. You can dial in anything from a slightly raunchy gain a la AC/DC or ZZ Top, on into some pretty hefty gain. You could probably do some classic metal tunes quite easily. The pedal cleans up nicely with the volume control, though you'll never quite get all the grit out with the big balls John implanted into this pedal.
I was overjoyed when I ran the pedal into the drive channel on my amp. I had to keep the gain around 9 o'clock though, and just use it as a boost to avoid a swirling mass of feedback . The pedal really thickened up the tone, and gave it a different attitude. Gobs of gain on tap here, but didn't get too muddy or fart out, and it didn't ruin the dynamics of my playing.

Anybody use a Phat Cat in the bridge position?..... i really like the CC in my Les Paul for gain and overdrive, but its not good enough for clean, which is what i primarily the sound i play with. Its a little undefined with too much mids and not enough clarity all around
i really like the chimey clean sound Pete Townshend achieved with his SG with P90s.....i know a Phat Cat in a Les Paul will not nail that sound, but i think it will help give me a better clean tone overall, with better clarity and less compression than the CC has, and i'm not sure i really want a lower output humbucker as i didn't really care for the 59 bridge i tried in this guitar in the first place
any thoughts?

Hey everybody.
I'm looking to upgrade my old Vox cab with some new speakers. I play everything from clean funk and country styles all the way up to newer rock (not Nu rock or metal, plenty of mids ). I normally play through either a wound up BF Bassman Export Amp or a Mesa/Boogie V-Twin with a 60 watt EL34 based power amp.
Feel free to make suggestions.

i have an invader in the bridge i was wondering if sd do a neck invader and if so whats the difference
Yes there is a neck Invader. It's not as hot as the bridge.
Strange but despite the fact that I'm a long-time Invader bridge user I've never played an Invader neck p-up. Somehow I thought that something so hot would be too much for my unbalanced taste (I like massacre when I switch to bridge and angel choir when I switch to neck, that's why I ended up with the InvaderB / '59N combo). Anyway, I guess it's a good match for the Invader bridge if you want to get a balanced output.

Just put it in the neck of my alder/maple tele and it sounds awesome! very clear and smooth and sounds very good clean and overdriven. the hi notes are so crisp and there is hardly any muddyness in the low end great pup.
Thanks guys for your help,
now all i need is a bridge pup to match the stock is way lower in output compared to the phat cat, i was thinking a broadcaster but im guessing it wont be loud enough to balance?

I'm looking to get a white Evolution neck pickup for a quot;Bad Horsiequot; project. Anyone wanting to get rid of one, let me know.
PM or E-mail me if you have one for sale.
Thanks.
