Hi guys.
I'm new in this Gibson industry....
any oppinion about the different between the classic and standard Les Paul?
Howly!! which part of malaysia are u from? kl? jb? pg?
The Classic has the 60's slim taper neck, green tint to the inlays, and different pickups. I'd suggest visiting for plenty more details and opinions.
That's correct, the Classic only comes with a 60's slim neck while the Standard comes with your choice of a rounded 50's neck or a 60's slim. Classics have green quot;agedquot; fret markers, which is strange cause markers don't really turn green when they age. Also, the classic has a plain maple top while the newer Standards have flamed maple tops. The pickups in the standard are burstbuckers with alnico V magnets for more of a traditional Les Paul tone while the the classics have ceramic magnet pickups that are much hotter and better suited for high gain. The standards also com in more colors I believe. There is also talk that the new classics have two piece mahogany backs while the standards are still 1 piece but that has been debated. That sabout sums it up.
Yup..points well covered...
just wanted to add
My 2005 classic actually had VERY nice yellowish inlays and not the snot green ones....I really liked them.
Mine was a one piece body, maple cap, and had a very nice piece of wood for the cap (not flame, but nice figuring)
The classics all come installed with the pickguard. Only black standards do and the other standards include the guard but it's not installed. Guard says quot;1960quot; on the classic as well.
Classics have the metal volume/tone knob quot;pointersquot; (which I def miss)
Basically, if you don't need flame, and want a 60s taper neck, I'd go with the Classic (if you can find one without the really snot green inlays). Pups are def hot, but with some fiddling you can get some very good sounds out of them and they are always replaceable.

The technical term is quot;little metal pointy thingies.quot;
Go pick up a set and throw them on. Just be careful pulling off the knobs.
In addition to what was already said, the Classics have the old ABR-1 Bridge whereas the Standards have the Nashville.

You put a smiley, as if you were kidding. When I got my Red R8, it didn't come with them- and I called Gibson about it. I told them the guitar didn't come with quot;the little metal pointy thingiesquot; and he knew EXACTLY what I was talking about. They sent me a set right away.
The Classics were actually more expensive than the Standards during the 1990's, but the current line-up has changed to Standards being higher in the food chain with a price to match. The Classics were originally intended as a sort of reissue of the 1960 LP Standard, and they came with the ABR-1 bridge and nickel hardware. I guess they now come with the Nashville bridge and there has been more variation in the wood quality, but I'm sure there a good ones out there. If you can find a LP Classic from the 90's, then you will likely fare well, provided you like the slim-taper neck (which is not too far from a Fender C profile). The pickups are actually decent, but this is the Duncan forum after all and changing pickups is a matter of course.
