just wondering if theres a difference asides from the looks
You can hear slanted cabs a bit better while onstage.

If it's the top speakers which are slanted too.
I watched a Marshall demo video, where a guy who has worked with them for 20 years said;
quot;Jim Marshall once made a joke about the slanted cabinets, a customer asked him why they were made like that, and Jim told him it's because it points the speakers up so you can hear them better. And that's bull****, it's pure visually. It's simply because Jim thinks it looks better.quot;
But I am no expert, I can find the video though. I didn't make an exact quote, but it goes something like that.
imo there's not a big difference in tone (at least not as big that i would notice it) But an Amp Head just looks better when standing on a slanted cab if you ask me.
A they look better.. and if you are directly in the projection of the top speaker you can hear the nuances better.. but of course you are usualy playing them loud enough so you hear everything anyway
Doese anybody make a 4x12 cab with the bottom two straight and the top two slanted? You know - with an angle built into the cab... it seems like a good idea - best of both worlds.
It somehow seems wrong on a full stack to slant the top upwards - directing the sound into the ceiling...
Slants look better. Straight cabs have those wheel cups on the top, and sometimes the head's feet will fall into one. Straight cabs push better bass, and usually sound a little fuller.....thats why you still see a lot of guys opting for straight cabs.

isnt that what an angled cab is?

So anyway... this seems like a good idea - being 6'5quot;, I hate to have all that sound going into my knees.

I've heard that as well...

You know... Like having a slant cab on the bottom and straight cab on top?
It really does make a difference what cab you put on top. I'm primarily a bass player these days- and for years my main gigging rig was a 4x10 and a 10 15. Whenever you see pictures of bass players rigs, if they're using a 4x10 and a 15, the 15 is usually on the bottom and the 1x10 on top- so that's the way I did it. One day I had some help setting up my rig, and realized the 10 15 cab was on top, and I was too lazy to change it. That made the hugest difference to me- that's when I realized I like the sound of 15s. Because the 15 was usually directed at my knees, I never fully realized how good it sounded.
As far as a difference in the sound of a straight vs. slant cab. The straight cab HAS to have more internal volume in it. Add to that, the speakers are all mounted to the same baffle. Whatever difference that makes, that's where the tonal difference is.
Slants are brighter and straights are fuller and more directional. I don't care for the extra brightness, so I only use straight cabs.
Slanted cabinets, by sound wave mechanics, will have some odd sound problems a way out, but not really anything you should have to worry about.
I think straight looks better
Newbie need use search function!
Straight cabs have a larger interior volume and so they have a little bit deeper and fuller tone than the angled cabs.
hmm, ok so do most of you prefer straight cabs?
im thinking im gonna get a Peavey XXX soon and just wondering what cab i should get with it, so far im thinking straight

Nope...I prefer angled cabs. They LOOK cooler!
On an open back cabinet it won't matter a bit in terms of tone, it just has a slightly different projection.
With enclosed cabs Lew's assessment is true in that straight cabs have a slightly fuller, deeper tone (theoretically). I say theoretically because given the size of the enclosure and the fact that guitar loudspeakers do not move a bunch of air, the difference in frequency response is barely, if at all, audible. Most of the time the sonic difference people hear between a straight and angled cab has to do with the projection. You are more likely to get off-axis sound when you are standing over a straight cab than a slanted cab.

Not a peavey cab, find a good used Marshall, or an Avatar, Splawn or Bogner.
Peavey heads are cool but IMO their cabs are lacking.
Ive talked to Scott Splawn of Splawn Guitars about this before and he says that he makes only straight cabinets because he says they sound better. Ditto for Budda amps and several other amp makers. Personally I couldn't say, but Scott really knows his stuff and his cabs are fantastic sounding so I think its safe to say that there is at least some difference.
