I finally have an acoustic drum set up and ready to record, along with a drummer that can and wants to play it. Will miracles ever cease!
Its an 8 piece Ludgig with 5 cymbals. I have 6 mics on it. A Blue Ball (thanks T.O.!) on the kick, AKG PL 790s on the snare/hat and floor tom, 2 SM 57s on the 4 rack toms and cymbals and an AKG C30000B on the room/overhead.
I only have two short demos to mix off of but I already have slammin drum tones with minimal engineering.
We start recording monday!
Ur only using 1 mic as an O.H.?
Can't wait to hear the results!
Sounds cool.
Waits for clips
From what I am hearing I only need one overhead mic. I'm using the overhead primarily for cymbals and depth. The tom mics are picking up the cymbals as well and a bump between 2k-8k really brings them out on the tom channels and then I can get the cymbals ringing nicely in the overhead. The C3000B tends to be a little bright so it's excellent as a room source. It's also a condenser mic so I don't have to be right up on the source to get a solid level.
I'll probably replace the AKG PL790s with SM57s. The PL790s are a deceint live vocal mic but they are a little hotter and voiced differently than the SM57s. We'll see though because they sound good for the moment and I'm trying to hold funds for a Rodes K2 for the vocal tracks.
