I picked up my friends guitar today and I noticed I can play much much faster on it that on my guitar. I can not decided it if is the frets or the strings. I have .12's and he has .09 or .10 i am not sure. I think they are .09's. He has jumbo frets and I have medium frets. I think it is a bit of both.

It also might be that I play with a much lighter touch on his guitar than on mine.

When I get my scalloped neck in I think I will move back down to .10's or .11's

For all you scalloped players what guage strings do you use?

thanks,
edm

It could also be the shape of the back of the neck, or the radius. Maybe even the nut width.

on my scalloped music man, i use 9s...

..quite some time ago, when I was really into the quot;speed aspectquot;, I used the following gauges: (never saw the point of quot;scalloped necksquot;...but whatever!)

.009
.011
.014
.022w
.030w
.036w

requires some quot;precisionquot; fingering......

just FWIW

I use 9s, but i'm thinking of switching to 8s...and i like to play fast. How do you even play 12s? Ahhh.

Just wanted to say...that's just rediculous. I was playing some lights today on an LP and was like...WHOA!, light and finger-tapping was incredibly easy...although I couldn't get good low-e picking action going on there, I'd have to say...10-52 would probably be my bet set...I've got 11-56 on my 7 right now and those high-end strings are just wicked to play, they have so much tension it blows my mind.

Thoroughly understood, but that was 20 years ago.....and it was pretty common back then....but I will guarantee you do learn perfect finger placement and dynamics...(obviously, you didn't have too much choice if you chose this route back then!)
I would venture to say I'm well adjusted to whatever they sell a GC now..starting with .009......(I do play pretty fast! for a 38 yr. old!)

frets make a diffence too. with extra jumbos i feel more comfy.

A friend of mine got a scalloped ESP M-1. He uses .008's exclusively. It is a breeze to play, and even I can get up to a decent speed with that guitar. Dont like the tone of it, though.

i used to use 12's, but they muddied up my tone alot when they tarnished, and were hard on my fingers, so i went straight down to 10's...

on a scalloped board i use 9s but usually 10-52s for anything else.

Thanks for all the replys... How is your distortion and clean tones with 9's? anyone one have any clips of them with a scalloped board?

I think I am going to try .09's when they get here. I like playing them on my friends guitar. My only complaint is the high e feels like nothing... maybe the fender head stock on my neck will take care of that. Give it a little more tension... not much just a smige. His is 3x3.

thanks again
edm

well, you don't really 'hear' a scalloped board- it sounds just like a regular one...I am working on something now, which I will post to the clips section when it is done.

No i know that... i was just curious on how .09's sounded.... woops... should have cleared that up.

thanks again for all the replys.

I use 10-52 elixers. chris
