I've heard a lot of people say that dime-sized pots suck. What's the difference between these and standard sized pots?

The size.

Neither suck, becasue if you can get a CTS-size (large) pot into a Nickel Sized cavity you´re god.....It all depends on what it´s going in, there are high quality and total crap to be had in both sizes. People that generally say that small pots suck have IMO no idea what they´re talking about.

OK, that makes since. I guess the most common tiny pots are from Japanese Fenders, and most people don't like the Japanese electronics for some reason.

What are some traits of cheap and crappy pots? I want to be able to tell when my tonal problems are caused by pot quality.

IMHO the difference between cheap pots and quality ones are quot;feelquot; and longevity. And the longevity part can be remedied with a good shot of Caig labs DeOxit. There wouldn't be any sound quality difference with either.

Except in their stereo systems, where for some strange reason the same pots are quot;top of the linequot;

A good pot will be smooth, but usually quot;deliberatequot;... like a grease-packed bearing as opposed to an oil filled one (although some good pots are VERY easy to spin....they don´t sound worse, but I don´t like it when they´re almost spinning freely when the knob is on, YMMV).....The taper will be smooth (if you have the right one, they come in audio and linear taper, take a wild guess which ones you´ll probably want )...and they´ll hold up for a long time without any scratching (in the signal) or dropouts....
