I was just talking about this with Youngpup, and thought I'd mention it here. I've never seen an SHS guitar, but it opens up a couple of interesting possibilities. Choose something like a Stag Mag, or perhaps something beefier, like a Distortion (neck), for the middle. With proper, simple, 5-way wiring, you could split to either coil in the #2 and #4 positions so that you could have hum-cancelling chime without worrying about RW/RP, or magnet flipping, or any of that. But in the #3 position, you'ld have a nice phat humbucker tone.
Could be interesting . . . even if it did look weird.
nice thought, i'd be interested in see one.
Would Warmoth cut a pickgaurd like that?
They might, but I wouldn't think it would be that hard to do. You could just lay a humbucker cut-out over the top of a conventional Strat guard and do it yourself.
I'm going to try this myself as soon as I get few more irons out of the fire.
How about tele lead pickup, PAF middle, and strat neck?
Throw the bridge in series with the bridge coil of the hum for a bridge hum-type sound
i think a good, simple setup would be a 3 way switch with a middle pup on switch-so you can go Tele style with the neck.
Or, a 5 way switch and a middle on switch.
Great idea, but it might be inconvenient either to pick over or pick next to the humbucker.
artie...just go all out...do a triple hum strat with a coil split on each for each coil and a phase switch for each lol...you'd have like 20 mini toggles but you'd have every tone under the sun lol.

Wayne Kramer of the MC5 used a PAF in the middle position of his Strat!
I think that would be really interesting to see... but how often do people use the middle pickup?
I've done it! It can give you some good tones, depending on pickups, but I like the conventional HSS more. BUT I have also tried a SSH (humbucker in the neck) and I liked that! I used a 59 neck for that one. Lastly, I tried an HHS. It's a decent rhythm guitar tone, but not great, imo.
Of course, this varies greatly on your pickups, but alas, I forgot which pickups I used specifically.. sorry guys.. When I did this, just took a pickguard and made a quot;universal routequot; deal, where I could put any pickup in any position. It took a couple tries to get all the holes to work out right, but eventaully I got it.You put the pickups in, then just fill in the wholes with tape (it looks good by no means, but it gets the testing job done)
Im definately going to try this!
Never really liked the middle single coil of a strat (not 'distinct' enough for my liking), so the plan would be to either get a hardtail strat or a tele with a swimming pool rout, and stick a humbucker in the middle.
On that note, are there any teles with a swimming pool rout? This would be my ultimate guitar! Would keep the original tele wiring, but have one extra position on the 5 way switch to play around with.....still cant decide what to do with that posi though!
Anyone wanna have a crack at my question?
i think the middle HB would get in the way of my pick...
why not use a single-coil sized humbucker and do something similar

My MIM Nashville Tele has the swimming pool route - my Tele/Strat/Mini-HB job just required a Warmoth pickguard. No routing at all!
I think this is just about the perfect guitar for the experimenter. Easy to work on, and no collector's value to ruin.
Have you gone MAD?!?!
I like it. Let us know how it turns out.
please no... it would be ugly as sin

Well, the Peavey Generation EXP is swimming-pool routed, but take that purely as information - and not a recommendation. Its not a bad guitar for the price, ($170), but its not great either. Chipwood/presswood/glued body, and cheap plasitic laminate finish, but it does sound good.
But I'm replacing it as soon as possible.
