I plan to purchase a lot of effect-pedals a new guitar when I will visit New York in the near future. I looked at the prices at musiciansfriend.com and if I take those prices into consideration, the shopping in NY will cost me approx. 1361$. In my country, I will not have to pay import duty or value added tax if the value of what I purchase is lower than approx. 912 $... Therefore, my question is: How much may I expect to get in discount?
Also, I'm probably buying a Highway 1 strat, but I do really want the American standard if the price is good. How much could I get in discount if I purchase the am. strat instead, and leave some pedals from my shopping-list?
Third, and last question: will pedals do fine in being placed as normal baggage in the ordinary hold on an airplane? Thinking about temp.variations...
I'm not sure how many stores you'll be able to go into that will match Musician's Friend on every item. Stores will usually be a tad higher, but you also get to see the gear in person and don't have shipping costs.

Most times when I buy gear, I get it lower than MF's prices. If that fellow is buying that much stuff, he can easily haggle $100-$200 off of the prices! Money talks!!!!!

Money talks!!!!!All I know is that most stores I've been in frown on you bringing in a MF catalog and expect them to price match. You can usually get some freebies thrown in on bigger purchases, and you're right in that they might cut some off of a larger purchase.
There are very few music stores to do not price match these days...I woudl say buy as much of it from the same place and within reason you can make your own deal...
As for the temp conditions on pedals...don't sweat it...
As for HW1 vs AS Strats, I prefer the HW1's due to the tremolo, finish and to be honest if you're gonna leave it stock I prefer the pickups in the HW1...it's all a matter of taste...this question has been talked about a lot here, do a search and good luck

I 100% agree. I love the highway 1 series. Great guitars. Is it that the parts are American and assembled in Mexico or the other way around?
Usually you can get 35% off retail if it isn't the hottest selling item. If you are looking for a Strat and the store has a bunch of them, 35% off should be easy, maybe even 40% if the store is having a slow week.

Got ya, I wont buy it if its not under MF's prices! The bank roll I pull out of my pocket lets them know I am not wasting their time!!!! LOL!!!!! I also let them know I am interested in blowing some hard earned cash that day on alot of junk!!
Most places will budge on the price after pulling one of those tricks!
To me, the MF price tends to be the going rate. So you can work with that as far as to figure how well you are making out, I don't think you will need to ask them to price match.

Dude, where do you live?? I have to pay on anything over about 70$.....I think I´m moving

No problems here
I doin´t know how it is in the states, but when Roadstar was still around and people brought me the Catalog and wanted me to match the prices I politely told them to go screw themselves, because Roadstar´s sale prices were usually at or near my own price... interestingly enough they never wanted me to match the much higher prices for strings and cables
Bottom I´d rather keep the guitars myself than sell them for under 5 dollars profit

Thinking about temp.variations...When you visit NY you must go to 48th street..... between 6th ans 7th. There are about 8 music stores in this section and you can get a pretty good deal if you shop. Sam Ash (the original) is there, Mannys Music, Rudy's music Stop. Etc.. Another place to go to check for effects is 30th street guitars. They have a very large selection of hard to find effect boxes. Down in the village is Mat Uminov guitar on Bleeker Street. These are all ver well known and respected retailers in NYC.
As far as price you can expect to pay somewhere between 30 to 50% below list on most guitars , Amps and accessories. Depending on the product. For example Custom Shop Fenders will normally retail zat 20 to 30% off list, where a MIJ or MIM guitar will go as low as 50% off list. Good Luck with your purchases and have fun in the big City
I thought of visitting Guitar Center on Manhattan... The quot;mainquot; problem is that I don't have too much time to visit a lot of stores, unfortunately, so...
@ Zerburus
I live in Norway. Are you sure about that 70$-thing? It was incredibly low...
@ Bludave
Thanks for recommendations for stores. Uhm, as for the discount, with quot;listquot;, do you mean f.ex. Fender's own list...? Becasue those quot;list-pricesquot; are a lot higher than prices on MF.....
And thank you all for input
