Seems I get asked about this alot ... I ran across this quot;how toquot; and liked it ... so, I thought I'd post it here for you kind folks ... JIC you wonder'd how it was done or what it might take to DIY.
enjoy!
from : localhost/cool how this cat tapes the flames freehand ... hats off!
That's a cool link! I think I was at that site when I did my 1st flame job. Free hand is pretty much how you do it. I drew out a template, then cut it out. As I taped the guitar I just layed the template on for reference. I think it's easier to go completly freehand on a car, Cuz' you have lots of space to loop the tape. It's very tight on a guitar. You really need a plan.
on a custom job or other 1 off, everything is done by hand.. its how the pro's do it
if you need lots of guitars/whatever you gotta have a template or you'll be doing them forever.. and thx for the linkage =)
Cool deal, guy does nice stuff and looks like he is a pretty good 'striper as well.
Anyone interested in this stuff should really look into the work of Von Dutch and Big Daddy Roth too.
cool now ill be pimp'n in my ford escort biatch
I find it interesting how many car painting techniques get used in the guitar world .not to mention all the rat fink drawings and racing stripes.. but, I have yet to see a cherry sunburst on a hotrod! hmmmmmm come to think of it .. that might look cool!
