My friend has an old, very beat up Gibson acoustic guitar (from the 60s I think) . . . I'm not sure what model, but it's all mahogany and is a smaller body size than a traditional dreadnought . . . but anyway, like I said it's all beat up and we've been trying to fix it up. I set the truss rod, adjusted the bridge, and cleaned his fretboard. The finish on this guitar is all cracked and worn, and a lot of the wood shows through. He came up with the genius idea last night (when I wasn't around) that he should oil this guitar with like some vegetable oil. Settle a bet . . . this is a BAD idea right? Or will it do no harm to the guitar?

BAAAAAAAD idea.Vegetable oil is very heavy and will choke the pores of the wood, killing the tone.
The instrument should be refinished by someone who is familiar with Gibson finish restorations

DO NOT DO THIS!!!!!

You´d be better off spraying it with Krylon....

Get it refinished by a pro, or I´d actually just leave it alone... that´s part of what will giver the guitar it´s tone, is the old, dried out finish

NOOO! I just put soy oil on my acoustic 10 minutes before i saw this thread!!!

Well, if it´s a Chinese, Korean or Japanese Guitar that may not hurt

It's a broken FINNISH GUITAR FROM THE 70's!!!

A Landola to be more excact. Well, it has survived TONS of hippies and aunts, uncles and mothers, so i doubt the oil would kill it
