Ok, this time I'm setting up this poll without any customers around to confuse me. People can be so unreasonable, just because they've given you some money, now they want service.
Having gone through many of the posts in this forum, the following are the neck pickups most often cited those favored with the Donahue.
Thanks for voting, and you have my solemn promise that never again will I allow work to interfere with my quest for the perfect tone.
I am planning on replacing my current pups(stock) with a Vintage 54 neck and a JD bridge. I have not recieved the JD yet, but I do have the neck PUP.
The Alnico Pro II Tele Neck pickup works like a charm with the JD...
I've used an SM-1 Vintage mini with my JD for years now and I love the tone, but I recently picked up a Hot Rythm and it does sound pretty good. A bit dark compared to the SM0-1, but it's pretty cool for wailing blues leads through a clean amp setting. The in between is pretty nice as well, but I do miss the meaty brightness of the SM-1.
I have a JD. It used to be in my B Bender. I have a Dimarzzio Twang King to match with the JD on my upcoming Tele project.
As far as Tele neck pickups, I love the Twang King. However, I personally like an APS-2 especially in a modern progile neck...
I have a JD paired with a Phat Cat neck pickup, and it would sound good with an SM-3 or SM-1 neck pickup. It's a bit hotter than stock Tele neck pickups, so the STR-2 might work. I did not like the 5-2 Tele Rhythm that I tried in one of my Teles (although I liked the 5-2 lead) or the alnico 2 pro Tele rhythm that I tried in a Lite Ash Tele. My favorite SD Tele rhythm pickup is the Antiquity hands down, so that is what I would pair with a JD. However, at that point I'd probably just go with the whole Antiquity set.
Roandave,
Can I vote for the DiMarzio Twang King? They're blast! The neck p/u is getting good reviews at the TDPRI.. Eggman
i have the Twang King with JD and it sounds great
I have an APS-1 alnico 2 Strat pickup in the neck position of my Tele.
The middle position with the Donahue sounds VERY nice.
I've got a very warm and punchy neck position sound, as well.
I like the Ant Surfer best of all and it's what I use with my JD.
I also like the Fralin Blues Special alot but it won't give you humcancelling when combined with the JD.
The Duncan Custom Shop quot;Tele ala Stratquot; neck pickup is a strong and great sounding Tele neck pickup and it also has the metal cover to retain the look of a vintage Tele.
Those are my three faves.
The Alnico 2 Pro tele neck pickup is not quite bright enough for my tastes...I prefer alnico 5, although the Antiquity Tele neck is alnico 2 and I liked that alot.

Is that the custom shop Tele-size Surfer you had made or a regular Surfer for Strat?
I know its not conventional Tele, but right now, the Stag Mag is my favorite Tele neck pup. Sounds killer, both full and split.
