I`ve read that the C5 is a compromise between the Custom and Custom Custom . I`ve also read that it`s like a 59 on steriods and lastly I`ve read that it has a scooped eq. I`m wondering how it would work for hard rock and classic rock. Does it have a boomy bass and do the mids stand out at all?
It's pretty much what you described. To me, it sounds best in mahogany/maple capped bodies. It's the most 'middleground' of all the higher output pickups, so it retains a fairly vintage tone, with more output. Think of the EQ as a soft U, like a stereo's natural EQ curve. If your guitar and amp has great tone and adequate mids, you'll love the C-5. If your setup lacks mids, you may be better off with a low mid
CC or a highmid JB. I like the C-5 because it's basically a hotrodded 59. I'd go so far as to say that it should have been called the 59 Hot. It would have sold a lot more. Out of all the pickups I've owned, I think it is the one that could sit in almost any guitar and sound REAL good.
I am willing to try it, sometimes the I've got Jb it's a bit uppermidy for my tastes. But the C5 looks just like the right one for my needs.
I have a Nickel covered C5 9 1/2 out of 10 condition. Few months old for $60 shipped.
