I got word today taht my f 50 won't be done at the tech(one of the tubes wasn't working, so we diceded to have him look at it) for a couple of weeks. They said it was because they were really busy, but I don't really have a problem playing through my peavey amp for a while, but it's still a bummer that I won't have the glowing goodness of a tube amp for those few weeks
A few weeks? That's ****in dumb! Too large a turnaround time for me.

Oh and jeff, I'm getting new power tubes in it (i think) that my dad is paying for (yay), and at least it'll work
A quot;few weeksquot; is a long time to wait; when I had my Marshall modded by Harry Kolbe, a few weeks turned into a few months!!

HAHAHA! Well, IMO, this isn't that big of a deal considering it's the only mesa dealer/Authorized service place in this and neighboring states, and it's in a city of 300,000 people and a city of 340,000 is right across a bridge from this city. So it basicly could be worse.

You can order tubes directly thorugh the MESA website...pop 'em in and they fit the bias range MESAs are set at...
I'm sure ya can get some kind of 2 day shipping or something...
Yeah, if a tube was dead you shouldn't have to pay a tech for a bench fee. Call them and tell them if the amp is OK besides the tubes, you won't pay for anything more than whatever they charge for a full set of tubes. If they try and charge an hourly tech fee, they shouldn't.....they should just pop in a new, which takes 5 minutes.
Yeah mesas have a fixed bias, you just pop a new mesa tube in. No need to take it to a tech.
My tech will retube my amp for free if I buy the tubes from him.
The JJs I ordered for my Mesa stuff showed up in two days.
Order some tubes and get your amp back. I highly doubt you have component failure, just funky tubes.

Yeah...but I don't want to risk that...
the fixed bias totally slipped my mind I'll talk to my dad about bringing up the fixed bias thing and not having to pay for anything except the tubes. But I think he was going to look more things over than just the tubes...
Nite, seeing as you just bought the amp used it probably won't hurt to have the amp looked over by someone in the know. But assuming there is nothing wrong with the amp the bench fee shouldn't be over an hours labor and then you'll know your amp is running correctly.
I can't stress enough how huge a difference in tone the JJs made in my Mesa stuff. If you have to get tubes anyways get some JJs and have the tech put those in instead of having him sell you Mesa tubes.
The high gain kit from Eurotubes is $67.50 for the F-50. A Mesa pair of 6L6s is $40 from the GCs in my area. For the extra $17.50 you are getting all 4 preamp tubes including a balanced inverter.
JJs are cheaper than Mesa and sound better, IMHO.

(1st paragraph)Yeah, I was thinking that too. But the stupid thing is that even if the tech does 1 minute of work, we stil have to pay him the($50) hourly bench fee
(2nd) Would I have to get the amp rebiased if i would get the JJ's?
(3rd)really? thats cool..I'll talk to my dad about that.
(4th)more tone for less money, I'd have to say I'm in!!!

JJ makes matched sets specific to amplifiers. He tests them to make sure they are in the correct range to work with mesa amps.

I take that as a no to the bias question?

Right. You can't adjust the bias on mesa amps unless a tech puts in a bias pot anyway. I actually like the fact that you don't have to mess with bias on mesa amps. You just have to make sure you get mesa tubes or sets made to work within the amps range, like the JJ's.

Oh, cool. I thought that the fixed bias only worked for mesa tubes in mesa amps. guess not
Yeah, go back to the tech, tell him never mind, and bring the amp back.
Another cheap source for JJ's is Most distributors buy them from the exact same supplier, so as long as they're tested and matched, you'll be fine just popping them in.
If you leave the amp with the tech, they'll charge you $50 and also charge you an expensive retail price for Mesa Sovtek tubes. JJ's are cheap, and better.
Thanks for the info Joe. I'll either call him myself or be lazy(most likely what will happen) and my dad will call him. I'm planing on ordering the high gain JJ set and taking them to the place and poping 'em to and seeing if it sounds good. If it doesn't i'll keep my tubes in there, and have the dude look the amp over.you guys rock
