I have an old Carvin 4X12 with 70 or 75 watt celestions. (or the carvin imitation P) I'm thinking about getting rid of it and getting a Mesa 2X12 with Vintage 30s and a closed back. Will I loose quot;somethingquot; by going the 2X12 route. Besides two less speakers P. Any opinions on 2X12 vs 4X12 in general? I really don't want a Mesa 4X12 because I don't need it, and its insanely heavy. (150 pounds) Any opinions or comments are welcome!

I should be recieving my Earcandy 2x12 in a day or two, I'll let you know. Everything looks cool with it. Give Tim a call he's way cool and will fill you in on a few things(not to bash any other manufacturers). I have a Marshall 1960a cab that I bought in 1996 that I'll be comparing it to. Tim says the 2x12 will outperform the 4x12 in all aspects. I'll let you know what I think. I got a all black Buzzbomb, covering, 3/4 grill, tophat handles, wired for stereo and mono, eminence gb12s and a cover. The cab is birch outer shell with mahogany front and back.

I'll write somthing in a few days.

I went from having a half-stack to 2X12quot; cabnets and I'm happy with the change. I don't think I've lost anything.

The main thing I like is my current 2X12 is upright and ALMOST as big as a 4X12 so I get a really big sound and I don't have to set the cabinet on anything.

Rock On!

Well, no 2x12 will sound like a 4x12.

That said, the Mesa recto 2x12 is a great cab. Punchy and ballsy. Best low end I've heard from any 2x12. the best choice out there for someone wanting to downsize but retain as much balls as possible.

I liked the construction of the Mesa 2x12... it seems like it's very high quality. The only thing I dislike was the Vintage 30 speakers (some amps it works exceptionally well in... others... well...).

The Mesa 2x12 cab sounds pretty fat to me, but I've only played it with a Mesa single recto head. What amp are you using?

as for the cab, dunno, but I have yet to hear V30's sound good to my ears in an open-back cab-too much mid range- sound great in a closed back- at least in my opinion.

The 2X12s that I'm looking back are all closed back. I use a Mesa Tri-axis with a 50/50 power amp. Thanks for the replies guys! More comments/opinions always welcome!

You might also check out the Soldano 2x12 cab it's a little smaller, or a Bogner 2x12 if you want something with a little more bottom end than the Mesa. That said I don't think you can go wrong with the Recto 2x12, they sound great.

The Recto 2X12 is a damn nice cab. I owned one for a couple weeks and ultimately replaced it with a Bogner oversized 2X12. The Bogner is about $100 more but honestly does compete with a 4X12. The Bogner is a little easier to haul around b/c it has casters. The Mesa is a heavy little sucker.
