I have a strat with 3 normal single coil pickups. I've always thought about adding two single coil sized humbuckers (like a jb jr or lil 59) to the existing pickups next to the neck and bridge pickups to get the best of both worlds. I really want to keep a full single coil set in addition to humbuckers. Would this create magnetic field issues? How would placing the humbuckers slightly inboard from the neck and bridge pickups affect their sound? Has anyone ever tried anything like this?

Robbie Robertson did something similar back in the 70's by placing the middle pickup just above the bridge pickup. He did this to avoid striking said middle pickup while playing. You'd have to customize a pickguard, and most likely require a swimming pool routed body to accommodate the unusual dimensions.
