Hi,
I just bought a Strat and it has this pickup config...Bridge=custom flat, middle=stock, bridge=hot rail
My problem is this: I think that the bridge pup is reverse wound because the quot;in betweenquot; sound is soooo weak and thin and nasally that something is definitely wrong....is there something I can do short of buying another pup?
thanks,
bob
Ground the hot of the middle, and solder the ground wire of the middle to the switch!

Hi,
thanks for replying so fast....just one last question: will reversing the middle pup's wires do anything bad to the bridge/middle in between pos?

On the contrary. It will become fatter.
BTW this is not about them two pickups being reverse wound. It is due to them being out of phase, which actually does not have anything to do with the direction of the wind. Direction of the wind reverse polarity would eliminate 60's hum. And reverse wind same polarity would give you the out of phase. And non-reverse wound bridge and middle reverse polarity would give you in phase yet with 60's hum. See?
Reversing the ground and hot is equivalent to reversing the magnetic pole. That's why I think in your case you'd eliminate the out of phase issue you have pointed out. But I don't know if that would eliminate 60's hum as well, as I don't know the direction of the wind on your pickups.

Dr. Barlo,
Thanks again for the quick reply...I just realized that the bridge pos probably has the same problem but it's less noticable because it's a HB....the thinness is less pronounced...
I'll try this and let you know how it goes...

Cool! Am glad that I could help.

Dr,
thanks again...I reversed the M PUP wires and all is well.
While I had it open I did the shielding mod at guitarnuts.com and that was also a good move...the axe sounds great....lots of quot;cluckquot; in the middle positions without being thin...

This is one reason I'm always leery about mixing different brands of pickups.
You don't really know all the details till it's installed....then you run into these polarity/wind direction problems. Sometimes, you'll reverse the wires on the middle pickup, correcting the bridge/middle position.....then your neck/middle position is screwed up.....then you've got to swap the neck for the middle...etc... headache!!!!!
yea, i had some problems with phasing with fender and duncan pickups mixed.........luckily, i just put in a new fender pickup i got, and it is in phase AND humcancelling with the middle duncan pup.....i got lucky heh

In fact that has a cheap solution: Get a polarity tester from Stew Mac. John (Spina) has one.
