Yesterday met some metalguitarists and they were telling me , that they were putting cotton-wool in their trem compartment , so the springs woudn´t buzz . They said that every spring buzzes but you don´t hear it because you are used to the sound

They said that when you do fast and short breaks the sound is a lot tighter if you do this ?

Most of them were using those round flat cotton-wool things . So that the cotton-wool can´t come between the springs

Anyone heard of this trick before ???

i know this and tried it out about 2 years ago but i can't say i heard a difference anywhere in my playing. I removed the cotton-wool again since it somehow got on my nerves

I've seen a tech put a piece of foam in the trem cavity. I think it was to keep the springs from making noise. Haven't seen wool but I guess it's the same principle.

yeah i use foam in there on my peavey for the stop/start metal stuff, otherwise I get bad vibrations from the springs which really comes through at high volumes. i leave it all exposed in my strat though, i prefer the rough-round-the-edges tone there.

What's start/stop metal stuff? Is it a playing style?
