hey all just got a mayer strat....
(i know they are controversial but man i like the feel etc)

well got it home (after playing it about 45 mins at the store) and realized the frets are like a little tiny bit over extending the edge of the fretboard...
nothing crazy but u can kinda feel em some.

should i take it back or just have a luthier sand it some???

ideas, help??

Common problem on guitars (Fenders mostly IMO). This is something I am super picky about! They really should nip the end of the tang of the fret wire before pressing in the frets so it wouldnt have that problem. You could sand them down. That will do the trick but, when the wood dries (dry months) out you will feel them again. Maybe you could sand them down in the middle of the winter when it should be very dry?

hey man thanks for the quick reply.

i did not even notice it in the store...

it is not like drawing blood or anything, just something i noticed when i actually rubbed the rosewood/mapple joint area....

what would i use to sand a long long bar and some 220 maybe?

anyway it is a great little guitar cool sound, good neck, surprised there isnt more about them out there.

When i worked at a local store they had tonnes of Squires they would have to dress the ends of the fret tang poking out the edges.... It is tricky to do and not harm the finnish but i have seen the tech there do it.... but i'm not good enough to attemped it.......

Those Mayer strats are sweet. I was knocked out by them. I don't consider many to be special enough to mention, but those are.

Listen to theodie. When he's not busy kicking me in the nuts, he usually gives some pretty good advice.

i have a LONG sanding block i use for making model airplanes and it is like 36quot; or so, i am hoping i can use that and just lightly run up and back on a 45* angle or so for a bit then get it right but i am scared, i just got it tonite!!

and hey hamerplyr dude post a pic hahaha
controversial? why. they're ****ing cool

yours better have a racing stripe

slade

Frets popping out of the edge of the neck is somewhat normal. What causes it is in the dryier times of the year the wood shrinks a little, this will cause the frets to extend beyond the provided slots. Take it back to where you bought iot and ask them to fix it for you. In the future keep a liitle moisture near your guitars and it will help minimize this. You can buy a small room humidifier for around $30.00, this and a Hygrometer will help you manage the humidity where the guitars are being stored. You want the humidity about 45 to 50%. This will keep the guitars the most stable. Good luck with your new Axe!!!

ok thanks for the answers guys!

dangly, no racing stripe i came real close to getting a charcoal frost one off ebay but it went a little higher than i wanted to spend...

i am painting a highway1 body with some sonic blue, it may have a racing stripe.

bludave, the interesting thing is that my maple jv and my maple tele dont have the problem, i wonder if it is the rosewood..

anyway this is the first brand new strat i have ever owned and i love it the sound is cool and the neck is unreal!

thanks guys!!

I have seen it on Maple also! With Fenders it isnt quite as noticeable by touch becasue Fender puts about 90 coats of laquer on top of it!

Is that all they put on? Sheesh, tightwads.

Congrats on the new axe! I've yet to see that model (Nor do I know who this guy is, though I've seen the name bandied about here lately), but that is one reason why I'm getting to the point where I hate anything but a bound board (up the side of the fret).

1 on both Daves comments (blu and odie), good advice.

1 on both Daves comments (blu and odie), good advice.Hey man, John Mayer has been around a few years now.
He got big around i guess 2001
quot;..I want to knock down these walls around me, I want to bust through these double doors..quot; quot;...they always tell you stay inside the lines....quot;
something like that...

Anyway I was like sure a john mayer model yeah woohoo well a good friend whom i talk to frequently and trust said man go play one, so i did and well i have one now

his sig is on the back so from the front it just looks like a 60s strat.

the only down fall to me is the neck adjustment must be made by taking the neck off

anyway it is a cool cool guitar i would check one out!

I took mine to my local tech and paid him $65 to smooth them out. I love being a lazy, ignorant perfectionist!...errr...
