I'm wiring up a strat pickguard with 2 buckers and I'm using this diagram 2hb_1vol_1tone_3way
and I'm adding a on/on miniswitch using the wiring found here, link, to split the outercoils (it's the diagram on the left, 3rd from the bottom)... I didn't bother putting copper foil on the pickguard because of the HBs, but the pickguard does have a section of aluminium foil on it by the control area....

1. In the duncan schematic, shouldn't there be a ground symbol from the 3-way toggle? Is this a mistake?

2. Since the mini switch, 3way toggle, and the two pots are all touching the foil on the pickguard, can I just ground the volume pot to itself then ground the bridge, output jack and pups to it? Will the tone pot, mini, and 3 way be grounded because of the patch of foil? or do I need to run ground wires from them to the volume pot?

3. In the wiring for the mini switch I have to solder the green and bare wires from the neck pup to the mini switch and then ground it.... if the mini switch is grounded because of the foil, then I have this question: will the neck pup be grounded also because the green and bare wires are connected to the miniswitch, which is grounded...or do I still need to run a ground wire from there to the volume pot?

1. No. There's no need for a ground on the 3-way selector. Its function is to select quot;hotquot; wires.

2 amp; 3. Basically, you don't want to use the foil for an electrical connection. Its not intended for that, and the resistance through it could be questionable.

I'd run wires for all grounds.

Thanks Artie! ....but, about the foil...if I'd put some copper foil tape on there instead of just having the little patch of aliminum foil, would that work for an electrical connection? or is there no foil at all that's good for that? I get a little confused sometimes when I read through some of these things on the forum because it seems everyone says something different

Hey Artie, I've been using heavy duty aluminum foil glued on the pickguard for grounding pot shells, toggles amp; the control cavity shielding. (Using star grounding per GuitarNuts.) I'm almost positive that I verified the grounds with a multimeter. What's the downside to this approach?

If it works for you, then its cool. My reservations would be with time. If you're counting on the contact of metal parts to the foil, you could get some of the types of problems that come from disimilar metals touching. I just think it would be possible, that you might run into intermittent grounding problems at some point in the future. A problem like that could be hard to chase down.

If I had the guitar apart, and was wiring it up, it doesn't seem like much work to just add the ground wire and be done with it.

My 2-cents worth.

Sorry for reviving dead threads but having issues with drounding/shielding.

Ive cut a new pickguard out of clear plastigaze and have put a piece of paper behind it with a graphic on it and now need to put a layer of something behind it for shielding. Can I just put kitchen alluminium foil and stick it to the paper?

If I do this, when I am grounding everything do I solder a wire to the foil and then to the back of the pot where everything is grounded? I hear this is hard to do?

Grounding confuses me.
