Well, I posted this in tips/clips but there werent many responses. So I'm going to post it here too.
So how fast can you play? I mean 16th notes at how ever many BPM.
Sure, but I mean how fast can you play the RIGHT notes. And can you play them fast with QUALITY. I'm just curious. P.S. I'm a shredder so i like to play fast. lol
IMO it just doesn't matter...maybe some people think I say that because I can't shread...and I can't but I don't want to either! I wold much rather play something that means something and/or fits the song than to play 16th notes at 220BPM...Some of the best songs in the world don't even have guitar solos...hell, some don't even have guitars! I would rather have a song with a solid groove, or a killer hook, or killer lyrics, than a blur of guitar notes, the point is that it doesn't matter...but to answer your question...no very fast at all, is how fast I can play!
Guys. He's not asking about how well you can play, or how inspirational your playing is...
He's just asking how fast (mechanically) you can play...
We all know it's not all about speed. But speed is a very very quot;nice-to-havequot; in rock and metal, for diatonic scales with melodic patterns.
I play 8th notes alternate picking at 125 bpm.
I can play even legato 8th notes at 140 bmp.
So my right hand technique is falling behind my left hand technique.
Guys... He just wants to know. We all know music is about soul. He's just curious! Answer his Q straight if you should respond at all.

Hmm, never clocked myself.
I would say 'pretty fast' when I need to be, tho.
I dont know what tempo. But i can play 18 notes in one sec(flight of the bumble with jets attached to its butt). I can play Serrana Live Version, not all parts. Well, im pretty good at arpeggios - i can play very fast.
P.s. Paganini was a shredder. His music has soul.
Oh I've accepted that I can't go across my guitar's neck in .000000001 sec...(wish I could and I admire and appreciate those who can) I've been playing for years and at this point I know I wont be a shredder...So I paste myself to what I can really do...more slower scales...More classic rock type of solos....and most important since I don't have the lightning privilege make a good sound.....That is the fate of the unfortunate ones....Just kidding...I like to be able to play like I do....I just have fun with it.....

Childsplay, if a little hard on the wrists.. I've never really clocked myself on guitar, I don't really concentrate much on speed any more, I've been focusing more on trying to sort out my vibrato.
I'm not much of an elite shredder though, my sweep picking is nowhere near as good as my marimba playing.
I've played a guitar in the back of the car at 80mph
I play 16ths at around 140bpm. Not difficult after some practice. Everything is a matter of practice. I don't like shredding though
i used to play pretty darn quick like a year ago, but i dropped all of the shred stuff since i wasnt getting that much out of it. Shred is impressive, but it gets really really boring after a while.
I saw satch live in pompano beach last october and i really liked the way he played, but after 5 long songs i just couldnt take it any more. It was cool, but all the light speed chops began to bore me.
Some shred songs really pump me up and have feeling, like Far Beyond the Sun-lots of fast stuff between phrases, yngwie throws down some soulful, slower melodic licks in between that really hook me into the song. Never gets old!
Pompano Beach? You live pretty close to me.

Not very fast
I'm not very good at the lead guitar side of things, but I am practising and trying to get better at it

Paganini rocked hard.
I haven't used a metranome in a long time. I should hunt one up and see how fast I am just for the fun of it. I probably don't have the chops I use to have .......Joe
Nuntius, what is Marimba. It sounds cool, and you play very good. IS this thing you have to hit with sticks?
Mr. D, can you play 16th caprice by Paganini? Do you know what tempo it is played at?

Guys wait a minute?!
Do you really mean 16th notes???
Are we talking about 8 notes per bar or 16 notes per bar??
If you can do 16 notes per bar at 140 bpm, that's equivalent to 8th notes at 280 bpm. I don't think even John Petrucci can do that... I believe he tops out at 220 BMP for 8th notes...
Am I confusing something? Are 16th notes 8 notes per bar or 16 notes per bar??
