Hey guys... what do Explorers and flying Vs sound like? I mean everybody is talking about the sound of Strats, Teles and LPs, but nobody ever mentions those two models...

thanks for all your info

There was some discussion of Vs and Explorers in these two recent threads:

A few sound-related comments in among the outpourings of GAS.

Oh... thanks Simon...

Explorers sound good. Huge mass of mahogany can NOT sound bad.

Yep that's it. Explorers don't need help to sound great. They don't need to be tweeked and modded. They are good to go right out of the box.

They do their own talkin'

i dont like flying v's since ya cant really sit down with em. explorers are more comfy and have a little thicker tone but neither is my favorite guitar. if i was more concerned with my image and was playing harder music then id consider an explorer with a zebra sh6b/sh2n

Thanks men... WaR HeaD was making me serious Explorer G.A.S. with his thread lately... and you are not making it better... I need an Explorer!!!!!!

They're just not as popular as the other models. It's not to say that their bad.Originally Posted by jeremyi dont like flying v's since ya cant really sit down with em.

I don't find them awkward, but I can play equally well in the classical position.

V-s are all mids, sweeter and not as thick to my ears. A more open sound that I really love. Exp are less comfy to me, thicker toned and for me are a bit too beefy. I got the Hamer Standard before I got my V and have ended up liking the V much more. I find the V was much easier for me to dial in tonally.

Both look awesome but don't really share any sonic similiarites. Halen's Hot For Teacher is one of my favorite V tones ever.

I have a Gibson Moderne which is the red headed stepchild to both the 58 Limba V and Explorer, and I love that guitar...I have a set of Duncan Pearly Gates in it and it just has an amazing tone, big fat 58 neck profile, and feels good on a strap...not to mention limba sounds great even unplugged!

I love the tone of my Explorer!!! I also have a V! Not the best feeling bodys to play but, they are great!!! Explorers and V's have great tone though different sounding! I like them both alot!!

It entirely depends on the pickups.... most of them have the gibson 496/500 combo, just keep in mind that you're dealing with huge slabs of mahogany.

i think they are just alternative shapes/guitars than the traditional strat-super strat and lps... but the explorer has a thick sound to it...thicker than the superstrats imo... about the feel of the body...i think there's no problem playing any guitar (well maybe one of those bc rich beast, or something)... i always play in the classical position with any guitar.

Kommerzbassist, you´ll end up buying one, and you know it,

That's the problem dude... I've got enough money to spend on one next week and acute G.A.S....

Explorers and V's def need the right pups (as well as SG's or other similar Gibsons) compared to Les Pauls, which sound damn good with just abouthing from super low gain to super high gain at all kinds of different frequencies.

Explorers and V's need pickups with clarity in the high and low frequency spectrum..things like a punchy PAF with some high end bite or a Duncan Custom/Distortion. Many pups just sound horribly muddy/middy in them.

well im not sure what the 2 sound like but vs IMO are very uncomfortable to ay sitting down.

I like 'em both, but both are tough to play sitting down. Of the two I like Explorers a little better. To me they sound between an SG and a Les Paul. Beefier than an SG but not quite as full and deep of a tone as a Les Paul Standard. I'd like to have another Explorer...or the Hamer version.

I don't play 24.75 any more and never moded my explorer, but here's the Gibson contiuium as I saw it:

SG- usually brightest and best 'cut though' of the Gibsons, but still relateively full frequency with relateively low sustain- One of the best classic rock sounds for me

Explorer- Thicker beefer than SG, but less sustain than an LP- Perfect midrange crunch machine and more articulate than an LP-

V- More sustain than the SG, with a midrangy sound, but I can't say too much here as I also couldn't hold it and never owned one

LP- Very full range, heavy sustain- Extremely good at thick beefy, fat leads- But please don't flame me, they were always too thick for background rhytem, and not as articulate as an SG or explorer -

So I know I'm the probalby the exception, but my favroite Gbs were in this order:

61 LP (SG style)
76 explorer reissue
72 LP standard
