We played our first gig last night and I brought along my Strat with the Antiquity Surfer/Texas Hot combo. Two Surfers and a bridge Texas Hot Custom. I didn't bring my Matchless...I brought my blackface Deluxe Reverb with the Celestion G12H30.
I'd planned to bring my Matchless Chieftan and my Strat with the new Duncan Stack Plus pickups, but this was for a private party and we didn't play that loud.
Not to brag, but the tone was stunning! First gig I've done in quite a while and, IMO, one of the best tones I've ever had live.
The Surfers are simply the best neck and middle pickups available, IMO. I prefer them to the original pickups in my '63. They're every bit as lively and dynamic but because the middle pickup is RW/RP I have humcanceling in the #2 and #4 5 way switch positions...a real plus over the '63 Strat.
And the alnico 2 Texas Hot Custom I have measures a full 10K! It is fat and ballsy as all get out and when I take a solo on it I get a full throaty tone...not the ice picky overly glassy tone of some alnico 5 bridge pickups.
Anyways, the gig went great!
Kick ass Lew...I think that Surfers are going in my next Strat.
Im glad to see that you are happy with your tone, I knwo you have helped my a lot with my tone! Im also glad to know that you are gigging again!
Congrats on the great gig and great tone!
sweet! its always nice when you get things sounding great on stage, makes ya smile doesnt it
Aw Lew, that's great! Stuff like that makes you feel like a teenager again, doesn't it?
That combo would have to sound killer. Woulda loved to been there.
Sounds cool Lew.

Nice way to get back lew! On stage, with the band, that's the true test of your rig's performance.
Surfers in Colorado???
no, how can that be???
That's great Lew....And thanks to you for turnng me on to the Middle and Neck Surfers! There are those nights where we play a step above because our tone is really happening...It doesn't happen alot, but there are those nights where the tone is workin, the crowd is having fun,and the band is on...Having great equipment and great pickups really helps! Happy for ya Lew!
Bump
Excellent to hear, Lew. Reading all the reviews and comments about different single coils on here is not only educational, but confusing as hell too when trying to decide on a set.
Woohoo! Sounds good, Lew. I believe I'll be getting a set of Surfers for my JV
Sounds like a winning combination - Surfers/Deluxe Reverb.
I need to get my Surfers onto a plastic pickguard, because I'm starting to think that aluminum guards are crap for tone. My blue strat LOOKS great with the aluminum, but it doesn't sound as good as my other two.......and that's ashame because that's the guitar with the Surfers/Jazz Bridge......that's a great HSS combo!
Thanks guys! I'm still planning on using my seafoam green Hamer Daytona quot;Stratquot; with the new Stack Plus pickups and my Matchless Chieftan or SC-30 (or both!) when we start to really crank it up. But for this gig hum wasn't an issue and the Deluxe Reverb was plenty. I'm playing with a great bassplayer: Rob Galloway. Rob has played with quite a few legendary Colorado bands: Leftover Salmon, Navaro, Rick Roberts (of Firefall) and others. In fact Rick Roberts was there and sat in and sang a few Firefall tunes. It was a blast! Our vocalist is a gal named Sherrie Scott. Man...can she sing. She does her own thing but every once in a while I hear a little Billie Holliday or Dinah Washington in there. Terrific blues vocalist but she can cover anything and I've wanted to work with both Sherrie and Rob for years. I'm very happy with this group...one of the most talented line ups I've ever worked with...it took a group like this to bring me out of retirement and I couldn't be happier playing out again.
Congrats Lew!
It's a great feeling, playing out amp; even better when you get the sound right. Keep rockin' Bro.
thrilled for ya lew ... glad you get to enjoy the creative aspect of this hobby instead of just the business or just the technical side
would've loved to have been there
cheers,
t4d
When are you going to post those pics of your new band? Jeez, I don't even know what ya look like!
Any chance of some audio clips to share the experience of tone heaven?
