I refinished a cheep epiphone neck with tung oil. The neck was two pieces of maple, and the piece used for the headstock is flamed.
I did a total of four coats with fine steel wool inbetween. The last coat took a number of days to cure before it wasn't so sticky that I felt it wasn't safe to handle.
Sliding my palm up and down it doesn't feel great. It feels like it's grabbing, like super glossy polyurethane or nitro cellulose after you've been playing it for a while. 1500 grit sandpaper... steel wool again... now it's feeling better, but I've had better results with satin poly. I think that over time it might continue to get harder and faster feeling, but it's a turn off the way it is now.
It was very easy to apply and to work with. Each coat melts into the previous one really well, there's no sign of layering or anything. And the wood looks gorgeous, much better than what I think I could have gotten with poly.Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to use it on a guitar body or on furniture. It's attractive to look at. If the feel stays this way though, I don't see myself using it on another neck. Time will tell.
