i ordered a duncan antiquity II neck, ant. I texas hot bridge, and a rw/rp ant II middle for strat. i had it in my mind which pickup was the rw/rp middle, and the regular neck. it told me on the box, and i remembered which one i opened. then i heard with rp pickups, you put the pole-pieces facing eachother, and if they attract, its rp. i tried this, and it turns out that what i thought the neck pickup was, attracts both the bridge and quot;middlequot; pickups. so i placed what i thereafter believed was the right pickups in place. but i took a glance at the wires, and looking at them with the pickguard upside- down, the middle and bridge pickups have the white wire coming out of the right side and the black wire coming out of the left side, but the neck pickup has it reversed...... WHATS GOING ON HERE?

let me reiterate i guess, because the above post might be too long for lazy people (including myself) to read. right now i have ant II surfers in both middle and neck, and a texas hot ant I in bridge. the pickup in the middle attfacts to both others when i place polepices togehter, but the one in the neck seems to have the reverse wiring. so should i leave it as is, switch middle and neck, or what?

the trouble you are running into is the polarity of the texas hot and the surfers are reversed

so the only humbucking position will be neck and middle combined?

Jeremy, could you expand on that? In another thread, we were discussing whether you could always distinguish a RW/RP single by testing whether they were attracted or repelled by another (normally wound) pickup. Is that always the case? Here, you seem to suggest that there's more to it than that.

Get a polarity tester from Stew Mac. Just $7.00 to have these mysteries resolved forever.

With the typical Strat set-up, you have a RWRP middle pickup so you get humbucking in the quot;cluckquot; positions (#2 amp; #4). Naturally you get no humbucking in #1, #3, and #5 because those settings are for just one pickup each.

So... the very existence of a specialized quot;polarity testerquot; implies that the simple trick of comparing the magnet pull between pickups (repel = both pickups wound the same; repel = pickups wound differently, with one of them RW/RP) won't cut it . Is that correct?

Go to Target, KMart, whereever, and get a compass from the camping department. Works like a charm, and you don't have to wait for a shipment from Stewmac.

that trick is (i believe) for just polarity, not wiring. thats why i was confused. i dont know if my pickups will be humbucking in just position 2, both 2 and 4, or none at all. i think the polarity tester is for if you just have one pickup, maybe?

anoyone know what pickups should go where?

ok i think i just fugured it out. it doesnt matter which wat the coil goes (rw) but the polarity is what makes it humbucking in the 2 and 4 positions.... can anyone corroborate or refute this??

anybody?

anybody?

there are two things at work here and im a little tired so i hope i dont mess this up

1- magnetic polarity
2- winding direction

in order to get humcancelling you need to be reverse wound and reverse polarity.

i think the polarity of the texas is north and the surfer is south (i could have them reversed but the result is the same)

YOU have a top going/north bridge pup

to get humcancelling in the 4th position you'd want a top coming/south pup in the middle. you have this, its your normal (non-rw/rp) surfer but youll have to use the opposite color wire as you used on the texas hot (if you used white as the hot wire going to the switch for the bridge pup, use the black wire from the middle pup to the switch)

and to get humcancelling in the 2nd position youd want a top going/north neck pup which you should be able to use your rw/rp surfer for. again using black wire as hot going to the switch

ok i think ive got it, but please correct me if i messed up. i take the rw/rp surfer that was meant for the middle position, and i put it in the neck. then i take the white wires for both neck and middle pickups, and i use those as the lead wires, and take the black wire from the texas custom bridge, and use that as the lead wire? will that get me where i want to go?
